About This squirrel eats at our bird feeding station in the bush. In order to get his picture I had to get very close. So, I stood very still with camera in hand waiting for him. Along he came and watched me. With the way he stared at me, he seemed to be saying, "WHAT are you doing?".

Nice capture Mary! Our squirrels tend to clean out the feeders before the birds wake up! Regards--Bill Voizin

Great squirrel shot, Mary. Your wait for him paid off nicely. I love the setting he's in.

Shane Finnigan   {K:1990} 4/20/2005
Beautiful shot Mary! You've captured some really nice rich colours.

Jan Graziano   {K:17920} 4/20/2005
He/she is a beauty - whole shot has captured some lovely colors and details. This is a real "in your face". Sure am glad you shot him/her with a camera - and not with something else. Jan

K Blair   {K:1589} 4/20/2005

Nice closeup of the little guy, Mary!
Thanks for your comments!
Dave.

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 4/21/2005
A cute little fellow, Mary! Well worth the wait.
Looks like what we'd call a 'red squirrell' ~ sadly virtually wiped out by the greys.
Kind regards,Chris

M. Zafar Rabbani   {K:1451} 4/21/2005
Nice capture. I think the image is too soft and has distracting background. Use of loger focal lenght lens and a wider aperture would have produces a much more aesthetically appealing result. May be something like this. Overall the photo is very nice to look at.

Kind regards.

From Zafar

Nice capture. I think the image is too soft and has distractingly sharp background. Use of longer focal lenght lens and a wider aperture would have produced a much more aesthetically appealing result. May be something like this.

Overall the photo is very nice to look at.

Hi Mary,

It appears M. Zafar Rabbani liked your photograph more than his comment leads one to believe. I just saw it on the main Usefile page with his name as credit!!! So much for copyrights! Regardless, I think it's a great shot and I KNOW who photographer REALLY is! Keep up the great work.

Shane

M. Zafar Rabbani   {K:1451} 4/21/2005
It seems that this photo is there on the first page credited to me. I only posted an edit of this photo in my comments. I think admin will correct this error.

Kind regards.

Mary Brown   {K:69853} 4/22/2005
Hi Shane, it seems there was a mistake made. M. Zafar Rabbani's comment was chosen as the Featured Critique so a couple of his photos are diplayed under his name. As he had only one picture in his portfolio thus far, I think this one got picked up as coming from him--his computer. He did email me as soon as he saw it on the Main Page.

M. Zafar, thank you for your comment and your suggestion. Your revision does make the little guy stand out more.

Shane Finnigan   {K:1990} 4/22/2005
Hi Mary,

I emailed Usefilm admin yesterday so they could correct it. I noticed after posting you that it wasn't in his portfolio so I then realized what had happened. Sorry for the alarm but I was concerend for your credit. I should have reposted sooner but the correction didn't happen until about 1hrs ago.

Shane Finnigan   {K:1990} 4/22/2005
Hi Zafar,

Sorry for the mixup with Mary's photo. When I saw your name as credit I assumed the worst. Another life lesson learned. My apologies.

Shane

Mary Brown   {K:69853} 4/22/2005
M. Zafar, thank you for sending me this note. I suspect my picture got posted there as you have only one photo in your portfolio (and a beauty, it is)and usually two are posted with the Featured Critique. I guess mine got picked up as coming from your computer.

Hi Shane. Thank you for your concern. I really appreciate it.
I also emailed UF yesterday to ask that the mistake be corrected. Now that M. Zafar Rabbani has posted another picture, it is two of his on the Main Page. They are good ones, too.

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:196236} 4/22/2005
A magnificent capture, an excellent squirrel!
Also the composition is very particular.
I see a light out-of-focousing, maybe is the digital zoom he, with a light unsharp musk the problem is partly resolved.
Here, I would have enlivened a little the subject , putting the tail in the corner.
I like it! Is a great catch..
best reagrds, See you later, roby

;-)

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:196236} 4/22/2005
..ops sorry unsharp mask..
my english is so bad!
take care, roby
:-)

Mary Brown   {K:69853} 4/22/2005
Roberto, thank you for your comment and for taking the time to retouch my squirrel. It certainly looks much better--more crisp and defined. I appreciate it.
I am asuming you use PS.? Is the shadow frame also from PhotoShop?

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:196236} 4/23/2005

Hahaha!

Margaret Sturgess   {K:49403} 5/6/2005
Lovely - very cute too, I see you have had much advice and /todo on this image! Glad everything got sorted out, it is nice that people look out for one another. Because these things do happen - SOmeone who joined the site - I did an amendment to brighten/sharpen etc, - they then took off theirs, and posted my version as their own - saying - thought it would look better if I did a bit of PS work to it etc. Grrrhhhh
Margaret

Linda Bique   {K:73220} 5/21/2005
Mary this is adorable and a wonderful catch..I know how skiddish they can be...I like the soft focus, and sometimes that's better than not getting the picture at all..I love squirrels and chipmunks, we don't see them here so thanks for the look... a Lovely image Mary....Hugs...:):)Linda

Evelyn Mayes   {K:8132} 5/29/2005
Wow -- you could publish a book on all the comments on this pic! But I will still add my 2 cents -- I think he looks like he has little boxing gloves on and a pugnacious stance poised to take sunflower seed by force if he has to. I can just see him flicking that pretty tail impatiently and discussing your intrusion with himself . . . . ;) Well caught!

Opal    {K:3826} 6/27/2005
He is so cute. I feed alot of squirrels in my back yard everyday. It takes patience to catch a wild creature in a photo setting........................Opal

Thank you for your comments about my photos

Vini     {K:2012} 7/13/2005

Lovely, dear Mary. He does look at you with questioning eyes. If you go a few pages back in my portfolio you'll see that in the winter of 1966-7 I spent a few months among the Kurds in north-west Iraq. At that time it was very secret, now at least two books have been written about our halp to the Kurds. At that time I had a squirrel as a pet.
Thank you for your very kind comments on my "Tami and Koshka", "Black devil" and "Writing a ticket." It wasn't my car either. My car is blue, like yours.
Best regards,
Rafi

Aww there we are! :)
This is very woodsie and warm
Great shot Mary
what type camera is it you used for the pic?
and what lens setting ......

Paul

Mary Brown   {K:69853} 12/6/2005
Hi Paul. Thanks for all the great comments. I really appreciate them. My camera is a Kodak DX 7440--4 mega--4x optical zoom.
I used the auto setting as for now, my camera is smarter than me in terms of choosing the right ones. The f5.6, ISO 140,and 1/8 shutter speed were the ones I copied from the camera information after taking the shot. I did wait for a while for this little guy to come around again while I was standing there. I was just under his branch.
