lovely shot Thilo-- and very good treatment. try to crop out bright light on left? (I know--this is a pet peeve of mine) --that way, photo is more "internally" framed in shadow

Hi Thilo, I see both Marks' as well as joe's point. The light on the left could well be cropped out, and I like marks' phrasing of "is more "internally" framed in shadow" Joe's point about the sharpness is only relative; concidering this is a hand held shot at 1/15', it's of a very good quality. Funny how practise helps you improve, doesn't it? I rarely take a tripod with me, but I'm getting better and better at it the more I shoot, I feel. (yes, the last ore to iron shot was also made hand held, but I tend to wedge the camera a bit in between whatever is available) Solid shot, and again, the unusual toning to make it tick.
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Jeanette,
oh no, not so often =) I could travel a lot more, if my job would let me =)
But I always have my cam with me, and I tend to be very productive the last holidays... in Venice, I took around 700 photos =)
take care,
thilo

Venice.. venice.. venice :) can never get enough of this city. Beautiful lighting. I agree that the image is soft but sometimes it can enhance the mood your trying to convey which is what art is all about ..

Lovely colors of the night. Especially this kind of your photos make me feel I am there and watching the view from a hotel window. Live and natural. Cheers friend.

You left your hand-held "steadycam" superpowers in San Francisco?
Just kidding!
Nice point of view and time of day (good colour in the sky), but pitty about the movement. It is too obvious.

Hi Angelo,
hehe, it's not the same standing on a moving boat and standing on a non-moving lawn (although the lawn was horribly wet and I had to throw my shoes away afterwards) =)
thx for the honest feedback.

Hi Thilo, I think I'm going to agree with Angelo on this one. The colours and the reflection are great, but in this case, the overall blur is kind of too much. It comes across as a photo that you tried to take a sharper image of, but didn't work out, then tried to do something with. Probably the reason I see it this way is because I've done this myself so many times :) It's awful hard to get sharp images with 1/15 f 1:4 moving in a boat. Andre

Wonderful work Thilo, so you did this shot in a moving vaporetto? extraordinary indeed! the result you got, let me say, is quite stunning! Not so easy to get so balanced tones over the whole scene, as you did...not so easy. Simply excellent!
cheers Giorgio

First impression was "a bit unsharp", and I read your info about handheld etc and the discussion (thats the advantage of latecomers like me...). Then I thought about sharpening, a fairly good job would do "Focus Magic" with a layer mask, applied only to parts of the picture. YOur point is valid, the softness is nice and our eyes are not as sharp in the dark as in daylight, too. So, the impression is more natural here. If that is you intention, this is ok. Colors are very nice, compositionwise I like Mark`s idea with the crop. Regards; Carsten

Thilo did you take an image of the gondolas with slow shutter speed? Bet they will look ghostly and dreamy1 if you want to go soft go all the way ;) The image is unsharp but theres nothing you can do about it now, it?s a good excuse to go back to Venice ;) The lights reflection on the water and the yellow tones make up for the softness!

Hi Carsten,
I guess I have to try focus magic, as my tools cannot be applied just to parts of the image. thx for the info.
rest assured that my next trip to Venice will be more succesful regarding the outcome of sharper images ;-)
best wishes,
thilo

Hi Andre,
actually, it's 1/15 and f1/1.4 =)
I had my reasons why I didn't upload this picture within the first row of Venice pics. this is the second lineup where I wasn't sure to upload them at all.

Excellent image. The soft focus here works as it gives a different ambiance to the shot. It's almost a bit more close to reality, meaning how we actually see the original place. Nice work! -- Kind regards, Rafael
