About Just a common everyday Garter Snake doing his best to look mean while I try to get some action out of him for a photo. He was about a foot and a half long and very lively after his long winter nap. I didn't use the macro setting because I would have disturbed him too much getting that close. Approx. 3X on the telephoto.

Hi Andrei,

He is really not so dangerous. They will bite, if you bother them, but, they can't hurt you.

I'll have to give this a 7/7. Just the background of leaves is stunning enough without the garter snake. And the snake itself...the ideal is to have him looking right at the camera, and with its tongue in mid-flick...and you have it. That's why it's 7/7. Add to that the great great colors of the leaves and twigs contrasting with the herp's markings, wow! A favorite. By the way, these guys have an attitude, and they like to bite. Harmless, though.

Mark,
You're right about the attitude on these guys. I have a lot of experience with them when I was a kid at our summer cottage. This one was really lively. He must have just come out of hibernation. It was the middle of April and there was even a little ice and snow left in the shadows. I think I took about 10 or 15 shots of this guy with the telephoto setting and this was about the best one. I liked the position he was in and the tongue being out was a bonus.
Thanks for commenting.

...they must have something in their bite, because it doesn't smart, but you bleed a lot! :)
