simple..and very beautiful abstract!!!!

Verena Rentrop   {K:14417} 4/24/2005
no emotions...perhaps only the colour can create some...I like the soft shadow underneath...the tilt and the direction how it shows out of the shot...

Cheers,
Verena

Mitra Nademi-Nassari   {K:13245} 4/24/2005
Well done!

Gerhard Hoogterp   {K:6455} 4/24/2005
Nice reflection of the clip and a nice shot in general. The edges of the shadows do look like they are a but shopped off.. like after using the magic-want and deleting everything not selected.. An impression strengthened by the shadow of the sharp edge between the pen and the clip and the round shadow which doesn't seem to have the right shadowy gray. but then again, you write you only cropped the image.. weird..

Nevertheless.. nice shot..

Marian Man   {K:63909} 4/24/2005
simple and FINE!!!!!! very nice shot dear Hugo!!! vibrant red color!!!!!! very well done
best regards
Marian

Peter De Rycke   {K:37694} 4/24/2005
This shot was made without fisheye lens, still it shows pretty much the caracteristics of one, or perhaps it is the widening pen directed towards the lens that is creating this effect .. nice job indeed !
The shadows underneath make the subject float into the air .. great effect ..
Peter

Guido Tweepenninckx   {K:16140} 4/24/2005
looks great,nice shadow too.

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47515} 4/24/2005
Is not simple image, as many think, just try it and let us see the result! Clarity, light selective arrangement and presentation of high quality of knowledge and skill, the smooth shadow enhance the whole composition and gave it an extra look. It certainly a wonderful commercial presentation.I likes it. Regards. Saeed

Roger Williams   {K:81877} 4/24/2005
I'm impressed that it was your photoGRAPHIC skills not your photoSHOP skills that created this unusual image. So many would automatically think in terms of creating the image, rather than "taking" it. I find this most refreshing, and much closer to the original spirit of photography.

Di Ciuccio Maurizio   {K:57483} 4/24/2005
HI Hugo...fantastic light and excelent still life of magic color of perfect dettail..very beautifull shot..best regard my dear...a soon

arwa abdullah   {K:34425} 4/24/2005
Wonderful setup!
The diffuse light, the spot light and the use of flash insured the removal on harsh shadows, the background and the objects are perfectly exposed!
the shot might look easy but its defiantly not! :)

Adelino Barreto   {K:12661} 4/24/2005
Very god composition!
Congratulations.

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59778} 4/24/2005
EXCELLENT! Nice red i have to say and cool products composed just great! Nice dof and details!

Jeanette

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 4/24/2005
Spot on, I would say, Hugo!
Excellent commercial image!
Good d.o.f., a nice soft shadow and a fine composition.
Best regards, Chris

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:29943} 4/24/2005
Wow, or what!? no Photoshop?!.... I'm amazed that you could get such a clean shot without any PSing... It's pure and simple, and I like the positioning of the pen and clip and the resulting shadows. It shows them off as fun, matching products. Is there a complete line of red accessories to go with? That is one big clip, no? Antonia

karen clarke   {K:18847} 4/25/2005
I can't help my imagination-but the first thought that popped into my head was a dragonfly or perhaps some other flying object. I find the way you have positioned the items very appealing. Very abstract-like some kind of sculpture for an office building-the positioning of the pen in the image makes it seem very grand in size. Nice choice with pairing the white background with the red-very classic. I guess in a way its a "classic-modern" image-if there is such a thing. Anyways, a great product shot!~

Manu     {K:13023} 4/25/2005
Great change of style and subject Hugo....almost looks like an illustration. The suspended appearance and percpective all work well together.

I am looking at purchasing, over the next couple of days, a Nikon D70..I would like to hear your comments on this camera, please, as this will be my first DSLR machine and as usual there is so much to choose from. The new Canon EOS350 for example..?

Many thanks for your reply

Manu

Amna Al Shamsi   {K:20738} 4/25/2005
Simple and Excellent shot!

Bjorn Beheydt   {K:12096} 4/25/2005
Great one, the composition, the idea, the lighting (Very!). A really good picture for commercial use. I do have a question: why did you choose to overcompensate the exposure by two stops? Was it trial and error? Or well made decision?

NN     {K:26787} 4/25/2005
Brilliant idea ~ excellent work! Is the text on the pen supposed to show or not?

Antonio Trincone   {K:23167} 4/25/2005
you teach the softbox used here

beautiful creation, composition, coloes and lighting are all perfect, wel deserve all of 7's,great job been made here, simple but impresive, best regards my friend.

Pat Ziegler   {K:21363} 4/25/2005
I like the drop shadow and contrast of red on white. AN interesting looking pen. If that's a papper clip it's setting on then it must be tiny?

Good perspective as well.

James Hager   {K:6285} 4/25/2005
Stunning! Nice perspective and composition. I like the shadows too. The writing tip doesn't look as sharp as the other end of the pen, so maybe a slight change of focus would have been in order. Yes, I'm just nit picking there. :)

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/25/2005
hi hugo,

well, a different one from you this time. awesome depth of field, great sharpness. nice work.

best wishes,

thilo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/25/2005
Hi Thilo, Thanks, and yes, something different again. As you know, I rarely shoot the same thing, and try to venture out in as many fields of photography as possible. That's what I enjoy....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 4/25/2005
nice.. like the clean lines, like the shadow under the pen.. good work

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/25/2005
Hi James, Yeah, I noticed that too. Weird, though, as with f/22 @ 17mm I would've thought to cover such a thing as a pen... Can't quite remember where I put my focus point. It may have to do with the reflection of the backlighting in the tip, diffusing the (overexposed) light a bit. Not sure. BTW: Thanks for nitpicking! The only way to improve, as there's no such thing as a perfect shot, so we've set ourselves quite a challenge!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Antonio, The softbox thing is not too difficult. I knew what the shot had to look like in my mind, and I have a softbox, which I set up with the face looking up as the surface. I swiched it on, but didn't hook it up to the camera. (backlighting from below) Then I set a spot to create the shadow (or better: to emphasise the reflection in the shiny cover of my softbox, and set up the tripod with camera. Measured the light, and checked it with the camera settings. On the camera's hot shoe, I attached a flash with a diffuser, turning it's head to bounce off a white wall.

Hope this helps, and thanks for the comment.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/25/2005
Hi Bjorn, The +2EV was basically derived from trial and error. As I replied to Antonio, I knew what the shot had to look like in my mind, and I have a softbox, which I set up with the face looking up as the surface. I finetuned the settings on camera by adjusting the EV, so the surface of the softbox was nicely blown out.

Cheers,

Hugo

Claude Tenot   {K:9829} 4/25/2005
Ton portfolio est impressionnant Hugo...une grande créativité et une belle maîtrise technique..superbe...et merci pour ton commentaire

Massimo Di Maggio   {K:-56794} 4/25/2005
Hi Hugo, thanks for your comment! I know I?m late, but I went out from hospital since few days and I could not reply to you. This shot put a smile on my face, not because it?s bad or fool, but I was imaging you work hard with lenses and lights :) I must say the result is excellent, personally I don?t like shadows in this kind of shots, but I think they are not disturbing in this one. Bye, Max

Gust@vo Sch3v3rin   {K:115879} 4/26/2005
Todo tu trabajo es exelente Hugo.
No tengo mas que felicitarte!
Muchas gracias por comentar mi foto.

Fadel J   {K:13479} 4/26/2005
Very clean product shot indeed, but I'm not really sure about the shadow, it looks artificial especially in its color. I really admire that you achieved this with the use of PS!

Bobby Mun   {K:3688} 4/26/2005
Hi Hugo,

Neat and clean product shot. Lovely lighting with clean & pure white base.

Great work !

Cheers ! Bobby

Ian McIntosh   {K:38371} 4/26/2005
Stunning. REAL shadow?!!
And the body so plastic looking it looks real!!
Still, it's a lazy mans game Hugo when you could have put some time in at the key noard.

ISMAEL MARCOS   {K:10340} 4/26/2005
LIKE IT HUGO, AT LEAST IT'S DIFFERNET FOR ME.

I'M WAITING SOME HONEST COMMENTS FOR MY PICS FOR MONTHS. DON'T LIKE THEM AT ALL, I THINK...

WELL, THATS LIFE.

REGARDS.....

ISMAEL.

Omar Rifaat   {K:10135} 4/26/2005
Emotionless, but by no means dull! I think this dramatic shot would certainly fulfill it purpose and make me as a consumer somehow feel that if i purchased it over other pens somehow my life would subtly gain a little va va voom!

Paolo De Maio   {K:34166} 4/27/2005
Great and different point of view.
Finally exif data attached to the description.
Only who knows deeply photographics techniques show his knowledges sharing it with the others different by yourself.

In order to my shot Hugo
It has executed by using a long exposure but not 5 minutes.
5 Minutes was the description about a thought of mine... to be brave and to be stop for 5 min to take this time only for yourself for your own and develop thoughts, emottions visions, dreams...into reality...you know what i means....

Erik Neldner   {K:10896} 4/27/2005

L. Gould   {K:11900} 4/29/2005
I think I may like this shot a little more than the last one I commented on. Fantastic detail and clarity. Great!

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:176377} 4/29/2005
Hi Hugo
It is a big light, I think that you are a genius. this high key in the study is impressive!
I see also the light shadow of the reflex pen on the white surface!
The like it this crossing of lines.
good night
roby

Stephen Bowden   {K:64513} 4/30/2005
Excellent idea for a still life Hugo and the high key presentation is excellent.

The lighting and colours look super :-)

Best wishes,
Steve

Randy Lorance   {K:24958} 5/3/2005
Having commented on the second of this series, which includes comment about this shot,I won't add more, other than to say this is well presented and gives life to this inanimate object.

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21869} 5/4/2005
Hi Hugo,I must have missed this...but is so effective! I really like the puristic simplicity here...expertly captured.

Kam Broumand   {K:828} 5/15/2005
Hi Hugo,

Chris Hunter   {K:25631} 5/18/2005
Looks good Hugo, the perspective of the pen tip is well done. Good idea to get the pure white for the base, letting the pen material to float in open space,

Cheers,
Chris

JakeLM     {K:3365} 8/22/2005
With a "normal" subject you have obtained an effective and wonderful shot!
The power of this image is the incredible perspective and the perfect use of light.
Not only a technically well done still life...but a moving still life!

Kurt LaRue   {K:5067} 1/23/2006
Hi Hugo, guess I missed this one earlier. I really like it - the lighting and composition are very commercial. I'm curious though, is that a shadow or a reflection below the subject?

Best wishes, Kurt
