About Maya enjoys her bed very much. Something she must have gotten from me.

This is made using four layers.

The original scan,

a heavy blurred version of that as multiply (50%),

an extremely sharpened version (USM settings of 200/75/0) normal comp mode also with 50% opacity (this layer is basically creating more contrast but in a more interesting way than using curves or levels.

Last, an adjustment layer to get the sepia look.

Todd Carroll   {K:-278} 4/25/2005
David...great shot..my kids love to play on their beds as well....kind of like a trampoline! Regards, Todd.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks Dina! It is actually not the same technique I used on the older one, the one I wanted to make an action from. It is somewhat different, but works nice (IMHO). But I really need to find a way to put this into actions. When working with photos I want to be able to try several different techniques quickly to see what works best.

Muy simpática!
Exelente...
Un abrazo mi amigo!

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 4/25/2005
Great choices, David. This is a beautiful natural shot -- she is so "in" her environment here. And precious as always. Antonia

Wonderful photo..definetely a great work.. kisses to Maya..she is so beautiful..

arwa abdullah   {K:34425} 4/25/2005
Beautiful image!!!
Shes bragging and its very sweet :)
A shame that her feet are cut off, it dose unfortunately take away and distract from her adorable expression
Defiantly worth a re take :)
still it gets a 7++++++

Wonderful image - beautiful and natural. I was just about to comment on the lovely grain, and noticed it was film - love it!

Cheryl Ogle   {K:24494} 4/25/2005
Great shot David. Love the blur on it but how you can see what a typical kids room it really is. Great job.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks Todd, jumping on their bed is something we gave up on trying to make them stop. The only thing that works 100% is a bunk bed :)

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks a lot Gustavo. It is a lot of work to use film and process it myself, but I like the result very much.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks Antonia, the "in my world" feeling is what fascinated me about this shot. Took so many shot, only 2 turned out ok. Focusing with that camera is extremely difficult :/

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks Erkoc, when I see her like that I'm undecided if I should cuddle her or grab the camera :)

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks Arwa, the feet out of frame never bothered me, but that you mention it, I noticed it. Hm I have some shots in tall orientation, but they are not as good. They don't have the same feeling as there is just too much white wall.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
Thanks Terry, yes it's film :) My digital camera is in service so I processed some of my B&W film (still have many rolls waiting).

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks Cheryl!

Jan .   {K:8693} 4/25/2005
God I love that film!! It's really an adorable shot, David, and your technique worked well on it. I'm right there with ya, trying to streamline some stuff into actions. The playing around with it part is still fun, but becoming time consuming. Thanks for sharing the info, it's always interesting to me, to hear what others are doing...talk about 30 ways to skin a cat!!

Great job!
Jan

A very pleasing B&W shot, David. Looks like a well behaved model as well.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
thanks Jan! I'm always interested to hear what you think. I'm glad you like this one.

the problem I have putting something into an action is that many adjustments I do depend a lot on the image resolution. I can't find a way to make the value of say a blur dependent to the image size.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/25/2005
Thanks Bryan, my daughter is pretty much my favorite subject right now. :)

Amazing.

David.....c'est génial et tellement vivant....so you have picked up your old follow LIIIG ...you should still use it in 20-30 years...maybe not your D2H...OK...I shall try few pixtures with my Nikon S3...see you soon dear friend

Tiffany Hix   {K:5012} 4/25/2005
Great capture David, she is so fun! Thanks for the info on how the effect was created too! Wonderful!

Jennifer Lord-Palmer   {K:2596} 4/26/2005
I love this so much! Right up the rolled up socks next to her! Her position is great and of course your work is what makes the photograph so effective. She's a piece of work!

Jan .   {K:8693} 4/28/2005
David..what if you just put a "stop" in the action, so you can enter the "variable"?

Amanda Radovic   {K:3594} 5/31/2005
Way down here at the bottom is my little 2 cents worth! I love this and thanks for giving the method behind the post exp work - I'll have a little play with it myself. Your little girl is gorgeous and I sooooo love this capture. It is real, it is aesthetic, the dof is perfect and I love the balled up socks - REALITY!

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/31/2005
thanks a lot Amanda, what you see in this photos is exactly how I felt about this shot. It is simple and plain reality but at the same time the most wonderful thing having kids. I tried to document this and I'm glad the idea and feeling shows in the photo in your eyes.
