Hi Thilo,
It was a lot of fun trying this. I stole the idea of scanning my face from another Usefilm member Grant Delanoy. He did a lot of other interesting effects with a whole series. I thought I would try some composites. I'm pretty pleased with the nightmare-like results.
I just set my scanner on 96dpi so that it would scan by fast. Stuck my face over the glass and pressed the button a few times. Did some in colour too.
You too can have a portrait like "The Elephant Man" I just hope I don't get brain damage from the scanner :)

I've got a couple more of these to post also. I like the almost 3D effect I got out of this one.

You did a great job of using the nature of your tool to its best advantage, Andre. The scanner seems to impart the strangest feeling to images -- almost haunted or otherworldly. Your use of the spider and web was inspired.
I found that I preferred to have my model stand perpendicular to the carriage of the scanner, so that the carriage moved ACROSS his face rather than DOWN it. That way the reflection of the lamp in the eyes is vertical. Your image works well the other way, however, especially with the sunglasses.
96 dpi isn't much if you plan to print, is it? I've been using 360, which matches my printer. Sometimes I get jiggly artifacts in my images -- imparted by subject movement during the scan, but I kinda like the effect and try to work it into my treatment of the finished image.

Thanks for the review Grant,
I didn't really have any thoughts on printing any of these just yet. But the real reason I used the 96 dpi setting was because my scanner works at a snails pace when I put it up around 360 dpi and I didn't think I could stay still long enough to get anything decent. Still It is fun fooling around with the wierd stuff that comes out. I also got a lot of strange noise in the scanned image that I think might have been dust in the air. I did the same as you with the strange spots. I used the pinch tool or one of those tools in photoshop to stretch and enhance the spots to make an even stranger effect. I've put another up today called "Twin Peaks" Re-visited and plan to do one more tomorrow.

Here's an image made on a scanner, one in which the model was directed to turn his head as the carriage passed by. This scan took about twenty seconds.
I've used this technique since about '89, when I did scans with a videocamera and digitizing dohicky on a 7.14 KILOhertz Amiga. Talk about sloooow! The scanning process took about three minutes. Shades of Dageurrotype! I've every intention of firing up that old Amiga and retrieving some of those images...someday. The technology is so old that I've no idea how I'd get the images into a PC for processing and printing.
