Thank you Gary, the lens is great so far, though I've only used it a couple of times...so far I'm loving it. It's heavy, but my camera-man (big grin) AKA my husband (who is also minus a few dollars) doesn't mind carrying it for me, hehehe...Thank you for commenting on my pelicans. Linda

Hi Linda
Nice shot - well set agains the bg sky. Notice a little bit of blur on the wings - believe me - I know how incredibly difficult that is - especially in the falling light (I assume took around sunset/sunrise).
Birds are so hard to capture in flight - I have a couple of bird shots in my portfolio - for the three I have in a series - I probably took (and discarded) well over 100 shots in total.
Great work - quite like Margaret's crop too (she's good at that :) ) - though I feel she has gone a *tiny* bit over with the sharpening (her's has left a slight halo around the pelican)
Keep up the good work :)
Steve

A nice image, Linda. The sun on the wings is lovely. I don't mind the bit of blur in the far wing....it just inhances the feeling of motion. I am a little bothered by the unnatural looking color in the sky...or maybe it's just me... Anyway, I tried some color correction in the sky but don't know if the colors look quite the same on our computers.

Steve, thank you so much for looking and for your detailed comment on my image. Yes it was very difficult, I think I took about 80 shots and had 3 or 4 good ones. I had some problems with my camera not firing at times too, I'm still not sure what was wrong, but it was extremely frustrating because I had him right in front of me with clear focus and nothing would happen when I pressed the shutter.....I was lucky on this one with the sun behind me... it hit him just right and gave him that golden color. And yes Margaret is very good at that. I appreciated her input, I did learn from it. Thanks again for commenting on my image...all the best, Linda

To me, this is a standout in your portfolio and it is all because of the ligth which is just magical on the bird. Judging from the # of comments so think many others... I think the comments on crop and color correction are good but I think there is also room to play with an even darker sky if you like playing with that kind of manipulation.

Hi Linda -
Not sure how the Nikon functions - though I suspect it is not too far off the way my canon operates. I suspect you will find that your camera is having trouble selecting an AF point and focusing.
When I take bird shots, I fix the camera to use only one AF point - which I use as the point which I track the bird with. Not sure also on AF modes on the Nikon - but on the Canon - IO use AF Servo which continually tracks the focus to the point under the AF point.
On most cameras, you will see a notification of some kind (flashing light) if the camera is unable to focus. Quite often - if the camera is unable to focus in an AF mode, it will not let you take the phot - which sounds like the experience you had.
I do like Lea's sky colouring - but I also do not feel that your sky looks at all unnatural dur to the sunset environment
Thanks
Steve

Thank you Stefan, I really got lucky with this one, the sun was going down and it just hit him at the right moment, and I was fortunate to capture that moment. I appreciate your looking at my portfolio and your comments. PS is a new thing for me, and so I have much to learn, I too think the comments and suggestions have been good, I'm going to play with some of the features today, in fact. I'll check out the darker sky too..Thank you again for looking and your detailed comments..Linda

Wow Steve you are wonderful, thank you so much for taking the time to comment on my problem with the camera. I bet you're right, I'm going to look into that today. Thanks for the lesson. I'm really new at this, and I'm so grateful for your willingness to help and your knowledge..Thank you for your comments on the sky and the setting sun. I Like my sky, but I like Lea's too, and as Stefan mentioned it might be interesting to darken it too, so I'm going to play with it today in PS, I don't think I can improve on what Lea did, but perhaps a darker sky might be of interest. Thanks again Steve:) Linda

Hi Linda. To make the sky more blue I first selected it using the magic wand in PS Elements, set to a tolerence of 70. That selected everything execpt the bird. Next, I created a hue/saturation adjustment layer and, using the cyan setting, changed the hue of cyan to more of a blue, increasing the saturation a little as well. Then I again selected the sky and created another adjustment layer...this one levals. I used the white eyedropper and clicked on the upper cloud. This whitened the clouds. but also lightened the sky a bit too much, so I reduced the opacity of the levals layer a little...'til it looked right, then flattened image. It took longer to type this then it did to do it!

Featured Critique It's beautiful catch.
I was amazed looking at your portfolio and reading about your bio. It was great to know a retired registered nurse can keep her interest in photography and proves it at this age, great to know that you'd learn paiting too. Hats of to you dear Linda.
When you specified about use of border in my picture I somehow thought to see your work from your portfolio and I got the reason behind it [as you also recently started using them]. I speccially used the border for this one (Come, Past is calling... ) picture because it was not looking good without border.
You must shoot your grand children if they are staying with you, I bet you'll capture them in great pictures.

Thank you Girish for your interest and your comments. You make me smile and even chuckle, I'm a YOUNG retired RN, hehehe....I do have 3 beautiful grandchildren, (my son married young, hehehe) but they are living in the states, so I can't photograph them as often as I would like to...
I like the idea of framing my work, yes I recently started, I didn't know how to do it in PS, but I'm learning, and I don't think I'll post anything without a frame again. I just like it that much. And I liked yours as well. The one you chose really made your image stand out, so I think you made a good choice. I think as someone said it just completes the image..As for painting I haven't made it that far, I love photography so much that I may never get there....thank you again, keep up the good work...you are very sweet.....:) Linda

Wonderful capture... unique lighting and the reflection of sunset... Indeed we all are learning together... Here you could compensate the slower shutter with larger aperature (smaller no.)... So, if you use F/8 with shutter speed 1/250 or even 1/500... you'll freeze the wings and have more focused and sharper photo. But... I think the motion effect (blurr) of the wings gave more reality to the composition. What distract me here the little amount of noise in the sky.. the 70-200 lens is a sharp lens (I think :) ).. but sometimes the VR feature here might be not helpful and become useless.
Thanx for sharing this nice photo with us
by the way , a Neat image software might reduce the noise a bit :) ;)
Beat regards
Latif

Can't keep you off the Home Page now Linda! Reward for your wonderful contribution to the site and thoughtful critique as well as photo quality. Seeing other comments here, I must say that for me the sky colour is fine on my monitor, as is the exposure on the bird. Lea's work does seem to have enhanced the sky and contrasted the bird nicely, only possible though with our source material, just never ever lose the original file and copy it a few times before working on it. Then you can play to your heart's content. Well done Linda.
