This is a precious expression. I've re-edited selecting for the portion that sings to me, with some tonal adjustments. Antonia

Thank you so much Antonia!! I LOVE IT!!! I could not get the tones right on this one for anything. I like what you have done with it. Thanks again!!

Great shot and I like Antonia's crop very much. What grayscale conversion are you using? Might be something to experiment with.

RE: STEFAN

I used the image mode grayscale conversion in Photoshop CS and then just played around with the contrast and brightness through the curves option. I was not highly satisfied with the end result. I prefer Antonia's tones much, much more. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Ciana? thanks for stopping by ?the living and the dead? the other day? and how remarkable your immediately link with the Joyce novel ;-)?

Your fine portrait here, appropriately named, shows indeed the ?sweetness? of a lovely child! Very nice and engaging. A REAL connection between image / viewer - excellent photography!! (yes? Antonia?s crop works well too?)

The straight conversion into grayscale works very poorly in PS. In the future I suggest you using the following simple but effective technique to extract the richness of a color picture, using the ?Lightness? method. ( this is but one technique among others)

With the picture on the screen, go to ?Image?, ?Mode? and convert the picture to ?Lab Color?.

Next click your ?Channels palette? ? you now have a ?Lightness? channel separated from the color information.

Since it is the grey scale we want you click on the ?Lightness? channel to make it active, go to ?Image? menu, and click ?Grayscale?. Click OK to discard the other channels.

The channels pallet only shows the Gray channel.

On the Layers pallet click the background layer and press the ?Control-J? keys to duplicate the layer and switch the Blend mode of the duplicated layer from ?Normal? to ?Multiply?.

Image is probably quite dark, but it now that you lower the opacity to arrive at your desired (and much richer? tonal balanced destination.

Let me know if it works OK for you?.

You may want to check out Scott Kelby?s ?the Photoshop CS book for Digital Photographers?. The book?s published by ?New Riders? and is well worth the investment.

Hello Ciana - didn't see your comment back to me, but here is another suggestion:
Add two hue/saturation/lightness adjustment layers in Photoshop.
In the top layer take away the saturation completely
In the other layer, set the blending mode to "hue" and play around with the hue slider.
It is an easy thing to make an automated action for and it gives you a wide range of b/w conversion possibilities.
