About Straying from the path can sometimes turn up hidden treasures. Looking for a nice composition in the bluebell woods near my home I came across this group of mushrooms and fallen branch hidden deep amongst the bluebells. I wanted to give a feeling of the mushrooms hiding amongst the profusion of blue and the shot was challenging as it required the use of my 50mm wideangle lens. A wideangle lens on a rangefinder requires the use of an external viewfinder whose field of view is pretty inaccurate when focussing close-up. I wanted the branch to flow from the lower right corner but had to cross my fingers and hope that I'd achieved it. Additionally, the rangefinder is limited to focussing at a minimum distance of 1 metre and I had to find a happy medium between giving the mushrooms enough prominence and keeping them in focus! Luckily it all came together with only a single shot. Phew!

Thanks for the interesting details about this shot. I was thinking that an alternative composition could be from a point just to the right of this, with the trunk and the mushrooms forming more of a divergent "Y" path. Love the idea of getting down below "bluebell level"... Maybe shave off a little from the top - it brings the feeling even closer to the forest floor in my opinion.

Very interesting shot, Barry. I like that you were below the height of the bluebell flowers. Each time I look at it, I expcet to see a fairy coming out of the leaves. Great shot for all your work. -- Naomi

Thanks for your comment, Barry! This one is a stunner! The compo is unusual but works great, and the way you've used the bluebells as a surface line straight across is superb!

Hi Barry,
I find this one very interesting because to me it seems to have the same sort of dilema that a few of my nature shots have. I'll try to explain. From reading your about, it seems you have accomplished everything you set out to do. But I wonder if the shot would not have been even more effective with a portion of the top removed? Did you try it without the sky and the top fifth of the trees missing? Or were you keeping them in to try and create a feeling of something hidden way down low?

Andre

Andre, you make a good point. I did consider using the 80mm standard lens and cropping out all or some of the trees but when I did this the image seemed to lose some of its scale. The light through the trees and their height compared with the mushrooms is, I think, important as it informs the viewer. Whether I have the exact crop right I'm not sure but your suggestion's certainly interesting and it's why I like posting to this forum.

Hi Barry,
I understand exactly what you mean about wanting to include the trees and sky.
I didn't mention before how well I thought the mushrooms and leaves around them came out.
Andre
