About Use a completely different method to convert to B&W this time. Maya was sitting on my lap and was tired, her hair still wet from the bath. She looked so beautiful.

Great composition. I love the tones.

Good work. Shawn

thanks a lot Shawn!

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/26/2005
thanks Peter, I used PS's match color tool, then the highlight/shadow tool (adjusted this one quite a bit, though) and then hue/saturation to get my toning.
The match color tool is quite interesting. Take your photo and take a second one where you like the colors and tones very much, and simply match yours to the one you like. Sometimes the result is way off (when the two images are too different in color), but sometimes its really interesting and a good starting point.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/26/2005
thanks Lynne!

thanks Alison, I guess she will allways be beautiful in my eyes no mater how she looks :)

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/26/2005
thanks a lot. You have very interesting photos in your portfolio as well.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/26/2005
Thanks a lot Larry. I have been following your work and have to say it is very inspiring! You have such a freshness in your photos.

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 5/26/2005
That is really intense. Just a hair more on the left would have been nice.

Amanda Keeys   {K:9349} 5/26/2005
Love this one.. She looks absolutely gorgeous to me. Completely natural and so totally carefree. Even love the binky.

Cheryl Ogle   {K:24494} 5/26/2005
Love the DOF on this David - very nice focus on it too. Well done. DId you use Channel Mixer?

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/27/2005
Hi Stefan, thanks! I didn't look though the camera but tried to hold the camera on my streched back arm to get this photo. She was sitting on my lap 20 cm from my face. :)

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/27/2005
thanks Amanda, I was hoping you would like it. She is totally addicted to that binky right now. A couple of weeks ago it looked like the phase would end, but right now we are back to were we were a year ago :( She it toothing, though.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 5/27/2005
thanks Cheryl! See my replay to Peter. I used mainly the color match and shadow/highlight tool to get the look.
I love this lens so much. The contrast between softness/sharpness is so beautiful.

Cheryl Ogle   {K:24494} 5/27/2005
I love my 50MM too - it's so wonderful for portraits and the DOF is amazing huh?

Larissa Nazarova   {K:12112} 5/27/2005

Ciana Worme   {K:6805} 5/28/2005
Such great intensity for a little girl! Superb capture!

Carsten Ranke   {K:14461} 5/28/2005
Great expression (more tired than wild), B&W and toning is very good, as always ;-)
BTW: is CS2 worth upgrading ?
Regards;
Carsten

parvin dabas   {K:2652} 6/2/2005
beautiful, there seems to be a certain sadness in her eyes

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 6/2/2005
thanks Parvin, she was tired and only half an hour away from her bed time.

Bryan K   {K:59} 6/7/2005
How'd you get the color? Great comp and clarity.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 6/7/2005
Hi Bryan, in Photoshop I used the "Hue/Satuation" tool, set it to "colorize" (at the bottom of the dialog) and use 42 for hue, 25 for saturation and 0 for lightness.

Thta gives you a nice sepia look that I used here. But the tones in this image are a result of some more work. First the channel mixer to go from color to B&W, then curves for contrast editing, then I used the shadow/highlight tool, then the sepia toning.

I wish I could give you an easier way, but I'm pretty much experimenting each time I use PS.

Bryan K   {K:59} 6/7/2005
Thanks David. I tried it out on a self portrait I did yesterday. I mainly did the first part and will work on the rest later.
