About This was taken at the Quaggaskop geological formations, in the Knersvlakte (Valley of gnashing of teeth)in the Namaqualand, South Africa. It is a semi-desert receiving less than 100mm of rain per annum. I took this photo 2 days after a rainfall event which wetted the silt in this river tributary. The red colour of the wet silt is derived from the eroding red siltstone rocks (phylite = siltstone formed under the sea). The whitish patches on the siltstone is crystalised salt. The colours you see is not altered other than by the use of a polarizer filter during the shoot. Under-exposed with 1 fStop, brightness and sharpness slightly adjusted in PS.

Stunning colors. Absolutely mesmerising ! But for the green shrubs one could easily confuse it with a Martian landscape. Your painstaking description also enhances the appreciation of the capture. Seriouly, I have never seen anything like this before. What colors - I cannot stop raving. Goes straight into my favorites.
Congratulations, and thanks for sharing.
regrads, anurag

Thanks for commenting Anurag. I can assutre you that this location is mesmerising - I spend 4 days here and took about 2000 photos - will send some - at some places the colours are even more astounding, even unreal. Take care.

Stunning colors with a good "About". I can't wait to see a landscape shot so I can get a full screen image.

Terrific capture of the color of the rock formation. Thanks for sharing what you did. Very helpful. Looks almost like liquid rocks... Beautiful. Andree
