About A second shot from the Derwent Dawn series again using partial infra-red film and an infra-red filter. Again the conversion to JPEG has darkened the image somewhat.

..great series, one better than other...a real nature show!

Gennaro Guarino   {K:12265} 6/2/2005
very good image, here I see a bit too darkness on the stone reflections I think that this an infrared effect.

La metto tra le mie favorite, è davvero una foto stupenda

Another shot to inspire experiments with IR... How could the jpeg conversion darken the image? I hope you don't mind technical questions!

Barry Wakelin   {K:7838} 6/2/2005
Stefan, I think the darkening occurs because Photoshop is converting from Adobe RGB to sRGB for web viewing and so it has to compress an extended 16-bit tonal range into a very restricted 8-bit range and it has to lose information from somewhere and in the case of black and whites it seems to move the whole tonal range downwards. With colour I find that it de-saturates the image.

I like this one even better. Nice work!

Of the 3 I think I like this the best, simply because of the composition. Excellent work.
Must dig out that roll of SFX from the back of the cupboard

Great capture. Love the way the clounds are just dragging on in the picture and refleting in the water. Very cool moody B&W.

This is a beautiful scene angle. The sky going right across with those directional clouds. Very well done.

Barry,

About the JPEG conversion causing darkening: do you mean that you scan the image and it's ok, but when you save as JPEG then it gets darker? Or your scan immediately comes out darker?

I think the detail looks like it's still there, just needs to be brought out.

The reflections on this one are superb. I wish you had emphasized them a little more.

Barry Wakelin   {K:7838} 6/3/2005
Angelo, the scan's fine and the TIFF image I use for printing is fine but when I convert to JPEG for Usefilm it all goes dark!

Femke de Wit   {K:5262} 6/3/2005
Beautiful and perfect in B&W. Femke

Shane O'Neill   {K:3064} 6/3/2005
this is my favourite of the three. Love the apparent cloud movement. Top drawer.

Angelo Villaschi   {K:49617} 6/3/2005
That is very weird! What do you use to edit and save as JPEG?

Barry Wakelin   {K:7838} 6/3/2005
Angelo, I'm using Photoshop CS.

Carsten Ranke   {K:14461} 6/4/2005
My favourite of your Derwent Dawn series, because of perfect composition. Great landscape film, this partial IR. The only problem seems to be motion blur in the sky, depending on exposure /need for stopping down for DOF
Regards;
Carsten
