Gorgeous macro!

Carolyn:

Thank you. I'm trying to show bugs or water droplets on the floral shots I take now to provide some interest and make it a little different. This one is interesting because I could make out the pollen grains and the real small fibers of the plant.

Michael this is great - I see what you mean about using a different angle, and not having to shoot the whole flower - you've got much more detail in here, and it's far more exciting - how do you get so much dof?
I am very grateful for your comment on my flower - it was really helpful, and has given me a whole new perspective.
Thank you so much!

Sally:

DOF - It is all in the F-Stop. Higher stop, more depth. I get these shots while walking trails, so I'm really at the mercy of location (shade or open), and how bright the sun is shining. For this shot the sun was blazing and I was in the open, so I was able to shoot at something like F16.

Most of the time you will see my material is shot at F 3.5 for a shallow DOF.

My rule of thumb is to shoot at 100th of a second for these tight macro shots because the flowers blow around on the wind and I'm pretty much using a 8:1 - 14:1 ratio. Even with steady hands there is a lot of shaking, especially after walking a few miles wearing a pack my muscles jiggle a lot.

Sally:

I forgot to mention that I take a lot of photos - I have a big memory card. I'm using an older F Nikon manual focus lens, and I have no metering or auto focus for these shots. I have to pretty much guess the exposure, and then when I get it right I have to take lots of shots before I get the subject in focus. The field is so shallow that a slight wiggle will blur it out.

A suggestion from a photographer to me was to set the focus and then move the camera to the subject.
