Chris,
Nice apple study. I like the apple placement and the light falling on the apple. I also like the grain you have managed here, which I am surprised since I always thought of XP2 as a very smooth film. The grain works really well in this picture.
There are a couple of things I think let this picture down, though. One of them are the black spots on the apple's skin, especially the one to the right, in the middle of a highlight. Another thing is the background, which is a bit distracting. Maybe there is a reason for that board and seam, but it is not apparent.
And third is the double shadow from the apple.
At the end of the day, these details only get noticed if the viewer spends some time looking at the picture. Which is what I did, because it is an engaging photo, a good idea!

Thanks for the great critique! I should've just cloned those spots out. Any ideas on how to get rid of a double shadow like that. I just had the regular room light on and then a maglite(diffused with a blue Walmart bag:)--poor man's lighting system) on the right side. I still want to keep the main shadow. So how would I rid myself of the other one without losing the main shadow?
I do really appreciate the honest feedback. I'm very inexperienced with still lifes and need the help:)

Hi Chris,
As you may see from my portfolio, I'm not exactly experienced in still-life either :) But my sugestion, for what it's worth, is to keep it simple. Start with a single light source. Maybe use a reflector (a sheet of white paper or some cooking foil, or a mirror) on the opposite side so that the contrast range isn't too big --- reflectors shouldn't cast any shadows.
With your maglite set-up (good idea!) you should be able to check for shadows before pressing the shutter...

The double shadow doesn't worry me.
I like the degree of unsharpness in the background - looks just right.

Great job. Looks like one of my daughter's practice drawing pictures, complete with perfect shadow and everything. I like the grain you've used as well, gives the photo some texture. Great job!
