About "Yao Zu" literally means "Yao people." In hiking through the rice terraces you come across many local people working their fields, and often carrying heavy loads up and down the mountainsides. Some of these people are well into their 50s and are still in quite good physical condition, which was a pleasure to see.

This woman (and the other woman in the other two uploads) are in traditional Yao dress, which is quite colourful. The women also tradtionally have very, very long hair, sometimes reaching down to their calves when it is let down.

Exposure information: s1/170 f3.1.

Wonderful picture James. The colours and dof are great.
Maybe it would have been nice if the lady wasn't exactly in the middle...?

Hi Chantal... when I was taking this photo I had someone literally banging on my arm distracting me so I never actually got the shot when I wanted it. I was aiming for a few seconds before I shot this photo, to get a more frontal aspect (and keep her to the left a bit more), but it wasn't to be.

The perspective in this shot from this higher view point is amazing. the layers from person paddies to field below give wonderful depth to the shot. I love the shine on the water in the fields and the wonderful details of her dress and baskets. Alison

This looks like it could be a great piece on a wall. There is something very artsy about it.
I like this one very much.

I just wish she had something peeking from out of those baskets.

Very nice image,
Lori :)

James - first of all what a superb portfolio you have - it is so interesting to view such wonderful pictures - this particular photo caught my eye - it is beautifully composed and so informative about the landscape and the life style of the lady you have captured in the image - I am suprised that it never received some formal recogintion - regards Jeff #:0)

Today I have uncovered yours portfolio: a lot interesting. Between all the photos I have chosen this why it it succeeds to transport to me, with the imagination, in China.
Best regards.

Dave Holland   {K:13041} 12/10/2005
I added this one as a favourite because of the striking contrast between the woman and her unique background. A privileged glimpse at a foreign culture.

Amitava Banerjea   {K:7076} 3/18/2006
Wonderful picture. Simpy fantastic! I'm at a loss for words. The background is almost surreal.

She looks rather over-dressed to be carrying loads in the rice paddies!:-)

Best regards,
