James,
The lighting is superb, and you've so beautifully captured this landscape. It's quite an impressive realistic image.
But what I find as equally fascinating, is the possibility of using this same image as an abstract piece of art. To my eye, if the image were cropped just below the houses, so that only the terracing in the bottom half of the image remained, you'd have an entirely different piece of art that remained ... of equal, but very different beauty.

Hi James, A very powerfull composition. It has the ability to hold the observer's attention without causing the eye to wander around looking for a viewpoint.There is so much on show but the photo keeps the mind focused on the panorama and is to be highly commended for having got what you planned to achieve. What a brilliant shot. This kind of terrace cultivation is also very common in the Hills of India, specially in the Himalayan ranges of the State of Sikkim and West Bengal.

This is a wonderful pattern, James. Almost a surreal abstract, with the sun's rays, reflecting from the terraced rice files. The predominance of the pale green, contributes to the unique tone.
Have you ever seen the first Alien film? The terraces almost appear like the effects for a sci-fi film. It appears tranquil. Yet this is the landscape of the most populous country in the world.
A truly superb landscape photo. An image to be proud of. 7.

Fascinating glimpse at a very different culture, and beautifully composed. The colour is great and the photo is nicely balanced into two sections with the slightly misty background beyond the village and the brighter foreground.

Looks like a painting. Again good timing. This is the place I am longing for and not far from where I am living. Fuji DC has a bias of green color. Whearas Nikon inclined to red. If you use film camera to take the shot of the same place, you will get a silver grainy one with high density in the image.

Wonderful scenery!
I have some questions to ask about your journey. We have been talking about going to Guangxi a lot but never made it. When you were there, was it easy to navigate between locations? Was accomodation in-expensive? Place tourist friendly?

hi alvin.... you really should visit guangxi. you can get to the longsheng rice terraces from yangshou on a day bus, and stay a few days. the same tour bus can pick you up at the dropoff point on any day you like, using the same ticket you came out with.
accommodation at the terraces is very cheap and comfortable. i paid RMB20 for my own room in a little guesthouse in the hills overlooking the villages. there are no problems there as a tourist, even if you dont speak mandarin, its not a big problem.
if you go in early october you can see the terraces changing colour, in january you might get lucky and see snow, and in june, when i was last there, they're full of water. so you can see something nice almost anytime of the year.

Amazing capture James, I agree with most of the critique, nothing more I can say except amazing!!! The history of our rice terraces were settlers from this land ,China, who arrived here 2000BC. There are places in the mountain ranges where the terraces extends throughout the mountain but I haven't been there yet.
I enjoyed looking at your photos, now I know another good travel photographer, I enjoyed looking at places you've captured, very interesting perspective, feels like I've been there... cheers!!
