Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17525} 7/5/2005
Well, well. The man is busy with work for a while, then comes back with style!!

This is a dizzying view of something that feels like it should be familiar, but the fisheye and the upward view makes it so unfamiliar. This isn't how a city looks when I'm standing there, but it is exactly how it feels!

I like how the shutter speed freezes the action of the cars and people, but the wide open lens still allows the lights to glow like a slower speed would produce.

Congrats on the SC!

Kelly    {K:20268} 7/5/2005

Well I don't know, Hugo....you disappear for months and the minute you start posting you get an instant SC...what luck..!

Just kidding...not normally a great fan of the extreme fish-eye look but very occasionaly a decent subject comes along and it all fits in. Great exposure and clarity as usual...well done and thanks for the comments.

Cheers

Manu

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 7/5/2005
Excellent image.. it really captures the feeling of NYC... love the perspective that the fisheye gives..Even though the colors of the signs etc would be great, the b/w tones are perfect for this scene. So, how many lenses do you carry around with you...always worry about carrying too much stuff walking around the city :) great work and congrats on the SC award

caporilli    {K:169} 7/5/2005

Burak Tanriover   {K:16604} 7/5/2005
Hello Hugo,
very nice picture,
the fisheye works perfectly here.
the contrast and lighting are very well balanced here.
I don't know exactly why, at the upper left part of the picture the writing "new victory" on a signboard pleased me very much.I think the reason is that it adds to the composition and balance it very well and when everything is curved to the same direction, this signboard is curved to another.
I like your picture a lot and congratulations for the award.
My best wishes,
Burak

Roger Williams   {K:82679} 7/5/2005
Welcome back, Hugo, I missed you. And welcome to the wonderful world of the full-frame fisheye! Nice to see this shot properly rewarded...

BW is the right choice indeed
congrats on the deserved award
Giorgio

greg collins   {K:11937} 7/6/2005
This is cool. Love the tallness of the buildings and the curve in them. Have just got a fisheye lens myself but haven't used it yet so getting lots of inspiration from photo's like this.
Regards Greg

tom rumland   {K:14874} 7/6/2005
huge! very nice! congrats on the sc... very well deserved. i don't recall seeing this one before ;^) and so out of character for you too. b&w? et tu hugo? just kidding with you.

actually it seems to be a very good solution for the color fringing we noticed on this lens when wide open. i am amazed at the dof you can get with it even at f/2.8. i also like that you chose not to correct the perspective. the curved lines add that extra dynamism (tension?) to the scene. one of my favorites from you. although i should save that judgement until i see all 3 ;^) looking forward to it.

take care,
tom

Maria Luisa Vial   {K:36017} 7/6/2005
So Hugo... You disappear for a while and come back with such a great image... Excellent composition and use of the extreme wide angle... Love it in B&W... Definetely a well deserved SC...

Lex Bronkhorst   {K:14152} 7/6/2005

Massimo Di Maggio   {K:-56773} 7/6/2005
Very rich photo, full of details, but they are not disturbing because they are part of the city life, I?m glad you converted it in BW, the lights and the dark areas create a strong and charming contrast, there is a bit of overexposure here and there, but I think it?s normal in a night shot, of course I like also the fisheye effect, very strong and curious. Bye, Max

Orazio Minnella   {K:46644} 7/7/2005
Excellent perspective and beautiful point point of shot.Nice B/W tones.Best compliments as for the picture as then for the SC.

Omar Rifaat   {K:10135} 7/9/2005
Hi Hugo, Nice to see you back. Congrats on the award. You capture perfectly that dizzy feeling in NYC. I like the fact that you use the word 'corner' in the title but due to the fisheye and also the architecture there actually is no corner in the picture. Overall it has a very soft, round feeling which makes the atmosphere more 'human scale' and inviting rather than the more typical feeling of alienation and angularity you get in big cities.
Nice work.
Omar

Rashed Abdulla   {K:153041} 7/9/2005

You have captured a great effect in this shot, Hugo. Your choice of B&W is perfect to make this image everything it can be. The clarity and detail are stunning. Congrats on the well-deserved award.

Mark

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Abel, Yep; it's called New Amsterdam. Just like NYC before we traded it for Surinam...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Ha Riny, With the 10.5 mm lens, you don't need t lie on the ground; besides, the approx 1.5 m you gain by doing so is irrelevant compared to the heights of those skyscrapers. Besides, the approximately 170 degree view angle you'll get with the fish eye captures about everyting...:)

Met willem is alles uitstekend. Groeit als kool. Misschien zal ik weer eens een drieluikje van hem maken...:)

Goed weer van je te horen! Ik ben veel te lalng weggeweest.

Groeten,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi MS, Thanks for your comments! It's good to be back, if only for a fortnight....

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi John, No tripod here. But with f/2.8, there wasn't really any need for one, either.

Thanks...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Roby, Thanks, my friend! Good to hear from you again!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Paul, I always carry around too much gear. On this trip I brought a D100 with a 10.5mm f/2.8, a 50mm f/1,8, a 17-35mm f/2.8-3.5 and a 28-105, f/3.5-5.6, and on top of that a MF Yashica mat... Good excersise...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Greg, I bought the 10.5 at B&H when I was in NYC, and keep it attached to my camera by default ever since. I love the extreme w/a effect.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Burak, thanks for your indepth anaylis. Very interesting to hear what other people think, much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 7/10/2005
definitely a lot of lenses :) I bring a lot with me but only carry one or two and even that can be tiresome LOL

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Tom,

The DOF with a w/a always seems larger, it's easier to control, too. The only problem is, that a wide aperture also causes alot of aberations, that's also one of the reasons I converted them to B&W (yes, 'alas. Me too, Tom...;)) The primary reason for B&W is an aesthetical choice, though. I felt B&W fitted better with the mood and atmosphere of the city. (still do, btw...:)

Thanks,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi P.J.,

We went to see the Lion King there too... Amazing show, and such impressive costumes! Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Bobby, good to hear from you again. It sure is good to be back, if only for a fortnight. I'm the one who actually believes I'm a busy man...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Groeten,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Omar, if you look more closely, you'll see that there are corners everywhere.... :)

But on a more serious note, I always post my images in series of three, and the titel is not so much applicable to each single shot, but to the series. So hang on, and things will explain themselves...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
Hi Muguel, Yes, we did, we saw the Lion King, it was a spectacular show, with such fabulous costumes....

Thanks for the comment, good to hear from you again!

Cheers,

hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/10/2005
That is usually what I do too, if possible.... But I found a good backpack helps, too.

Cheers,

Hugo

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91033} 7/11/2005
hi there, haven't been to NYC for years, but this reminds me of how i felt standing looking up and feeling quite dwarfed by the height of the buildings...the hustle and bustle of the traffic and quick pace of throngs of people...excellent fisheye perspective and absolutely love the contrast level!...congrats for well deserved SC,Hugo...nice tonal range,too...regards,gayle

Hello Hugo, its interesting to see the skycrapers in NY with a Fisheye, its unique & special, super idea:)
Would be great for a poster.

-thanks for your opinion about my portraits, but honestly I don't like the Canon300D for portraits, I hope that my analog shots are better :))

best regards, Pia

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 7/12/2005
Hi Pia, Have to agree with you on that. In order to get the highest level of detail and contrasts, I still revert back to film too.

Cheers,

hugo

Zeev Scharf   {K:24818} 7/13/2005
Excellent wide capture of New-York at night Hugo, the lighting and low angle shoting are superb
Congrats on well deserved SC
Best regards

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 7/14/2005
Hi Hugo,

oh wow, this is it! What a comeback, my friend. Bloody awesome perspective, and now I know what fish eyes are made for. My next NYC trip will definitely be accompanied by a fishy friend ;-)

the perspective makes the image. A mild pity that some of the lights are blown out. But I know that light problems VERY well from my NYC pictures ;-) Virtually impossible. Okay, you may do some aperture series =) (as a fake solution)

anyway, very good stuff and great to have you back.

best wishes,
Thilo

Larissa Nazarova   {K:12096} 7/14/2005

Nour El Refai   {K:13778} 7/16/2005
the fisheye works verywell here

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 7/20/2005
Hi Hugo,

This really is an incredible shot. I'm struck by the sharpness of it, and the contrasts.

The fisheye certainly adds to the 'feel' of the scene, it's PERFECT! I would indeed be thrilled if I took this one.

Perfect composition, I'm wondering how on earth you managed to even get it from this angle.

So much to look at...and all of it GOOD!

Congrats on the recognition on this extremely fine work!

Have a GR8 day/evening,

Lori :)

Shane O'Neill   {K:3064} 7/21/2005

fantastic street capture!

NN     {K:26787} 7/30/2005
I do feel like an ant looking at this :) The Big Apple is consuming all the fresh air; can?t breathe, LOL! A perfect capture of pulsating urban life ...

Pat Ziegler   {K:21363} 7/31/2005
Congrats on the award! Awsome cononation of fisheye lens distortion and vertical composition. The movie billboard makes me think you took the shot some time ago? I love street shots. You can't find a scene like this in South Dakota...

Very well done, again, congrats!

Mindy Frankel   {K:157} 8/12/2005
Congrats! This is a very cool photo, so much contrast - what kind of effects did you use to get it to look like this? I'm a novice when it comes to editing photos. Thank you so much for all of your comments on my work - I'm really enjoying yours as well! Mindy

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 8/12/2005
Hi Mindy, thanks for your comment. I didn't do much to this shot. It was taken with a really wide fish eye lens (focal lenght 10.5 mm, angle of view approximately 170 degrees). The lens creates this destorted image. I did convert it to black and white. Did that with a photo straight out of the camera. When you do that, the tones will be a bit flat, so I increased the contrast a bit. I then cropped it square and added the frame. That's it, not very difficult...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Nuno Murias   {K:5314} 8/12/2005
Love it its nice to be back to this website and see more of yoru work.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 8/16/2005
Thanks Kristin, reading back through the comments I received, I visited your portfolio. Rather a shock to see it as empty as it is...

Cheers,

Hugo

great photo!love it

Enache George   {K:492} 12/10/2005
good work with that fisheye ! Still, one question: If you would have used a sigma 10-20mm on the 10mm settings, would the corners of the photo still be rounded ? (is the round shaped effect a characteristic of the fisheye lens?) thanks - george

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 12/11/2005
Hi George,

Thanks for your comment. In answer to your question: yes, any fisheye has this type of (rounded) distortion, unless you are using an aspherical lens, such as the Nikon 12-24 f/4.

Cheers,

Hugo

Great pic Hugo, very intelligent use of the fisheye. To me, it is one of the hardest lenses to frame correctly - and you had no trouble at all.

Thanks for you kind comment on my pic.

Have a good one.

iso 800 good choise for this photo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 1/23/2006
Hi Deniz, thanks. Yes, ISO 800 was the best option. I didn't have a tripod, so I had to shoot hand held. Any higher would only have increased the digital noise, and 800 allowed me a fairly decent shutterspeed...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hello Hugo, very nice perspective provided by the lens & the conversion to grayscale worked well for this cityscape shot of NY. Contrast & tone is perfect, warm congrats for the triple awards, a BIP would have given you the Grand Slam (lol), again superb photo. Thank you so much for all your kind & constructive comments, best wishes & keep up the good work.
