Preciosa foto Linda.
Me gusta mucho la composición y el motivo.
También me gusta el paso a blanco y negro, tiene fuerza.
Un abrazo.

Dirck DuFlon   {K:35779} 7/6/2005
Wonderful, Linda - I love the graceful arch of the palm fronds framing the whole scene! The empty dinghy and empty sea give this a 'castaway' feel - awash on a deserted isle with nothing but a camera!
"just sit right back and you'll hear a tale..." :)

L. Gould   {K:11900} 7/6/2005
I love the conversion to black and white. This would have a much different feel to it in color. There are lots of wonderful elements here--the water, the plam tree, the lone boat. They all work great together. :)

Ivan Møllebjerg   {K:5770} 7/6/2005
Hi Linda
Excellent composition that really "kick start" my imagination, I think that every person watching this picture, will create a story in his mind. The choise of B/W amplifies the athmosphere of the capture.
Great work!!
Ivan

Preciosa Linda...
Love the composition and excellent choice of b&w. I love the "high key" of the sand it makes me think of it as powder... The lonely palm and the "abandoned" boat combined with the ocean gives me the feeling of being alone in an island, just as "CastAway" (At least we don't have the Fed Ex packages here..LOL!!!).

Great conversion to B&W... Excellent tones and contrast....

Kisses and Hugs,

MaLuisa

Perfect, Linda!
Great composed and it has a good sense of depth (thanks too this boat in the foreground)!
This picture is really nice in B/W, but i would like to see the "original" in color, please post it here as a comment! That would be nice of you!
Well done!

By the way, Thanks for your last comment!

like the scene, the boat adds to the composition.. looks like a nice get away...

Mark Kresl   {K:9434} 7/7/2005
Beautiful shot very well composed, Linda. I never know when to convert a shot to B&W, but this one was a perfect choice.

Mark

ps.thanks so much for noting my pictures in the forum. Just when you think nobody notices.....

Linda Bique   {K:74033} 7/7/2005
Thomas thank you for your very thoughtful and kind comment...is there a particular reason that you'd like me to post the color version? I'm thinking I might post it another day as a post, but if I don't I'll post it here in the comments and send you a message....I really like this version and want to enjoy it fully before doing that...thanks again...:):)linda

Engy Farahat   {K:11591} 7/7/2005
Excellent composition dear Linda, beautiful b/w tones. and good lighting.

ng..

Linda Bique   {K:74033} 7/7/2005
Thanks Mark...as far as black and white goes...I convert and then let them speak to me and if I can't decide, sometimes I post both, but this one was clearly...for me anyway.....better in b&w...I don't know why...I may post the color version later on...thanks again I appreciate your comment...:):)Linda

Bradley Prue   {K:30312} 7/7/2005
Snappy little crop there, Linda! A good crop is like a good haircut.... those "extreme" snips are often the most rewarding! The tight crop here, brings out the quaint quality of this shot. It frames the scene in a way that makes this little spot feel like home. Wonderful work!
...Brad

Alison DuFlon   {K:36231} 7/7/2005
Great in B/W Linda even though I bet the color would be fun and bright. This photo has really nice composition. Alison

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47644} 7/7/2005
I like the most, framing very well composed, and the light is marvelous, superb work. Saeed

Asim Roy   {K:9701} 7/7/2005
Fantastic composition Linda, love b/w tone too, romantic shot, love, asim

Hanggan Situmorang   {K:37824} 7/7/2005
Very nice composition, Linda. I like how you angled the horizon sliced by the palm's leafs. The BW contrast could be made better, imho...:)
Hugs,
Hanggan

Linda Bique   {K:74033} 7/7/2005
Thank you for your comment my dear, and don't keep secrets, hehehehe, do tell me more...I used the channel mixer, 80/10/10, monochrome, and then played with a couple of others, had to be careful not to blow out the highlights, but would love to hear your explanation as I'm sure others would as well...hugs...:):)Linda

Dave Stacey   {K:120173} 7/7/2005
Nice composition, Linda! It really gives the feeling of a tropical island! I like your b/w tones.
Thanks for the comments, too!
Dave.

Thomas Jensen   {K:1026} 7/7/2005
Ok, do so :)
I'm just curious! -.-

/Thomas

Hanggan Situmorang   {K:37824} 7/7/2005
Yes, Linda, 100% means the BW won't be OE or UE (assuming that the exposure is correct).

I think you should tick 'monochrome' first, then adjusting the color slider afterwards; however, you need to remember which color you'd like to make it grey, as 100% at each slider means grey tone. 80/10/10 means that you choose that red colors will become grey in your photo, as it has highest percentage. I can't decide which colors need to be dominant, since I don't see the original. And....it really depends on your mood. Just let your hands play the slider while looking at the picture. Don't get stuck with numbers, as it will limit our judgement...:)
After playing with the slider, you can check the contrast composition with "Level" feature. Usually the balanced tones' height from left to right means "enjoyable", but again, it depends on what you want to present...:)

That's what I like about photography: It's painting with light, but a camera is not only a tool for transferring what we see, but it can act as tool to express our emotions..:)

I copied your picture, adjusting the macro contrast with curve feature until I got satisfied, then using dodging & burning tool, I adjust the micro contrast on some parts (the leaves and sea). Then using color balance, I added tone, and this will also effect the macro contrast. You can sometimes crosscheck it with the Level feature. Herewith I attach my version. Maybe you'd find it a little bit 'masculin'...LoL.

Take care, Linda,
Hugs,
Hanggan

Linda Bique   {K:74033} 7/7/2005
Wow Hanggan, thank you for sharing that with me...I personally love the way this looks, your version didn't upload, but I really like what you said. As a critical care nurse I learned not to look at numbers, but to look at the patient, so I clearly agree with you and try to do that when making adjustments too...I look at the picture and when I think it looks good I stop moving the slider...your b&w tones are always excellent.

I'm not sure what you mean by "tick" monochrome first, do you mean do that as the first step? So change it to monochrome and then move the sliders...ok I see, that's a great idea...And a great idea to check the histogram on the Levels feature to check the contrast, I haven't done that..wonderful thank you...:) Someone whose work I like suggested those settings (80/10/10) but I see now what you're saying and yes I will definitely try that first...as another option...

In this particular image when I went darker it started to remove the detail in the palm fronds, and I didn't like that...I didn't realize that after you convert to black and white you can still adjust color balance...since there is no color but you're saying that you can?...that's nice to know...I'll definitely check that out as well..

Now I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by macro and micro contrast...I mean I know the difference between macro and micro but could you clarify that in terms of contrast and where/how is that done...I know where curves is but???

This was a pretty simple conversion and I liked it immediately...but I'm glad you commented and have given me and hopefully others all of this wonderful information, thank you dear...hugs...:):)Linda

Hanggan Situmorang   {K:37824} 7/7/2005
Ooops...
I've just realized that the attached image exceeded the allowed size. Here I attach the smaller size..:)
Macro or global contrast is when you see the picture globally. This is adjusted using Level and/or Curve feature. Then after you're satisfied with that contrast, then you go into details, i.e. micro or local contrast. For example: small dark part of a face, etc. To adjust it, you can use dodging and burning feature...:)

Hugs,
Hanggan

Linda Bique   {K:74033} 7/7/2005
Very nice Hanggan I do like it...thank you for your wonderful lesson too...very much appreciated..big hugs to you....:):)linda

Ah... that's a wonderful tropical beach image my friend.
The composition and subjects are great.
Well done my friend,
Khaled.

Angelo Villaschi   {K:49617} 7/7/2005
The oars went out and left the dinghy all alone... the b@st@rds!

:)

Nice shot, Linda. Good b&w.

Roger Williams   {K:83282} 7/8/2005
What I like best about this is the composition--the over-arching fronds of palm, beautifully rendered, and the abandoned dinghy. I was uncertain about the very bright sand and bits of the trunk of the palm-tree. I know they were bright, but I felt they might be over exposed. The part I felt was weakest, which is that the sea doesn't really look like water, was dealt with nicely by friend Hanngan. That seems a distinct improvement to me.

John Loreaux   {K:85872} 7/8/2005
Love these beach shots Linda!!!that little palm tree looks so inviting!!! I would love to just sit under it and gaze out into the beautiful waters!!!To feel the warmth of the sun and the cool tropical breezes would be like healing to the soul! thanks for this moment in the sun!!! Very nice work as usuall my friend! take care!

Nice and contrasty, and the composition is great - I love the way the palm fronds both frame the image and shelter the boat!

Richard Dakin   {K:12852} 8/11/2005
I love this shot Linda. It is very appealing on an emotional level. Although I found Hanggan's advice interesting, I'm not sure I like his adjusted version better. I would need to see them side by side. His suggestion to forget the numbers however is very appropriate.
