About I was out for a vertical landscape, and ended up with a square format...
Actually, I made six landscape format RAW shots with 50% overlap (1/90 sec to 1/250 sec f:9 @10 mm), from near to skyscape vertically and stitched them to a V-format. At the end, I preferred the square format and cropped most of the pano away at last.
This is from three RAWs, stitched manually in PS (as 16bit/channel TIFFs), made a color version and a B&W. The sepia toned B&W was used as a background layer, the color version on top as composite with "color" blending mode. At last a slight perspective correction and a bit vignetting with an adjustment layer and brush.

Not an ordinary landscape. Well done!

Darin Higgs   {K:29} 7/7/2005
Carsten, you are one of my favourites on this site. Your photography is an absolute inspiration and pleasure to view. This image amongst your many works of perfection is just that - perfection. Well done Sir, on showing just how high the bar should be raised. Best regards, Darin.

eleonora frago   {K:2472} 7/7/2005
in my favorites!
so country, wonderful sharpness and tones

great!!

[[dead account]]   {K:6692} 7/7/2005
This is extremely cool. What a great image.

The only thing that bugs me a little is that I don't like the duotone color you used in the cloud area. It looks like it could use a more subtle golden tone to really make the clouds pop.

Otherwise, this is bloody brilliant.

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 7/7/2005
A beautiful wheat field. Now I can see how you can get sharp from here to there... Great work Carsten, Don.

SORRENTE Patrick   {K:3095} 7/7/2005
My "Editor's Choice". Congrats.

Dirck DuFlon   {K:35779} 7/7/2005
What a stunning photo, Carsten! I love the way the three poppies (in a triangular configuration, no less!) stand out boldly yet still delicate in the wheat field. The textural quality is wonderful here, as is the blend of sepia and color - it really sets a great 'stormy' mood! Only the small piece of cloud/sky right above the little hill seems a bit too bright, maybe, but that's nit-picking. A truly awesome image!

Francesco Martini   {K:12304} 7/7/2005
,,excellent shot!!!!!!!!!

This is awesome! You put much effort and it pays off wonderfully. I really like the texture and detail of the grains. The tones are very nice too. Well done!

David Hofmann   {K:23830} 7/8/2005
I really love this one! I'm a big fan of those colors but regardless you did a great job on the tones! This is very much art!

chantal heijnen   {K:979} 7/8/2005
Wow Carsten. The result looks great. I'm not sure if I get your technique totally, but it worked out well. My compliments.

It's always a great pleasure to view your work, Carsten.
I'm a great admirer of your vision, creativity and technical skill.
This one is a fine example of all three qualities.
Stunning!
Best regards, Chris

Wow, what a brilliant shot.

Gregory McLemore   {K:25312} 7/10/2005
Beautiful capture, the contrast and ceative PS work, a 7+.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30027} 7/10/2005
Breathtaking! The detail in the grass and selective color against the sepiatones is fabulous. As usual, your tireless efforts pay off. Just tackled a difficult interior shoot for an architect who wanted design elements captured duck with the outside views. The techniques I've picked up from you (blending different exposures -- stitching, etc.) were essential. As for landscapes, my meager attempts to mimick your techniques have shown me just how well-honed your skills are. My hat's off to you my friend. This one reminds me of Winslow Homer BTW. The dramatic sky and the peaceful yet also dramatic foreground -- adore it. Antonia

Toni, thanks for your nice comment. Blush... such a praise from you, thats a great honor !

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 7/12/2005

Carsten

Lukasz Kuczkowski   {K:14684} 7/12/2005
like sepia tones here and square format; good work

Barry Wakelin   {K:7838} 7/13/2005
Really nice. The selective colouring gives the image depth and the detail achieved through stitching several images is very obvious. Great work as ever. My wife, looking over my shoulder, says 'it's very nice' and she's an artist!

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59973} 7/13/2005
Excellent work!

beautiful composition

Manu     {K:13094} 7/18/2005
For me its the foreground that makes the shot...spectacular and a lot of work by the sounds of your about....well done. I might have even cropped the sky more. It looks a little too over-worked with the rest of the image and hence distracting.

You know when you look at the whole photograph and it either says yes or no or there's just something that doesn't "feel" right....this is what I'm getting here...hope you understand my ramblings..?

Cheers and congrats

Manu

Peter De Rycke   {K:39357} 7/20/2005
Exceptional, Carsten, the least i can say .. looking in awe from fore- to background .. just marvellous !
Peter

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 7/21/2005
Manu, thanks a lot for your impression - you are probably right and I have just uploaded a reworked version with less heavy sky. Hope you like it ;-)

Michael Kanemoto   {K:22103} 7/22/2005
Manual stitching in PS? Ugh. I have to admire the persistance to get that right. Admirable.

Jacinthe Duranceau   {K:1246} 7/22/2005
Unreal! One of my favorites, Great work!

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 7/22/2005
Hi Carsten,

to be honest, I like the split between the foreground and the background even more than in the previous posting. The outcome is great: The dramatic toning, the high contrasts and the desaturated look gives the image something special. perhaps a bit artificial but nevertheless very impressive. Your postprocessing skills are really good.

good one!

best wishes,
Thilo

Fadel J   {K:13605} 7/24/2005
Hey Carsten, i think this is a piece of art from both artistic amd technical perspectives, very outstanding work!!

Peter Houtmeyers   {K:3519} 7/24/2005
Exellent depht and overall sharpness.Very good photostitch! Since i am a beginner photographer and because u use the same efs lens i need a bit of advice. What kind of filtersystem do u use at 10mm? I have tried a slim screw-on polarizer and a gradient nd 0.6 filter......but they both give a lot of vignetting( even used seperately) at the 10mm end. This seems to be gone at 13-14mm. Maybe you use a slide filter system. Any advice on this matter???

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 7/25/2005
Peter, excuse the delayed response. First I tried a standard circ polarizer -> vignette, as you have experienced also. This polarizer is now mounted on my 17-40/4L. I bought a B+W slim circular polarizer (77 SLIM KSM C-POL MRC) -> no vignette, even @10 mm. The grad ND filter is a problem, because even the slim Cokin system holder vignettes @ 10 mm. And, the slim polarizer does not allow for another filter on top, no srcew thread. So I use the Cokin grad ND on top handheld as a makeshift, a bit tricky but it works. Cokin filters are plastic, so take care for the surface integrity and scratches, but optically, they are ok.

Regards

Carsten

Technical question: What is your opinion about this lens (canon 10-22) ? I'll bought it but...

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 7/31/2005
Os, thanks for stopping by !
The EF-S 10-22 is not an "L" lens, but... if you need the extra wide FOV, it is the best option available. And it quite decent optically, almost no barrel distortion @ the wide end, and quite good (not as good as my 17-40/4L, of course) regarding sharpness and contrast.
My absolute favourite is the 17-40/4L, one of the best zooms ever, IMO. I use both, and shoot with the 10-22 if I need a really wide perspective. On the long run, full frame will be affordable even for me ;-) So I will sell the 300D body with the 10-22 and use my 17-40/4L then for super wide. Ok I know the 16-35 is even a tad better, but...

Regards

Carsten

Hi Carsten. Wow, I'm a bit surprised I haven't "stumbled" across your portfolio before. Your skyscapes, cloudscapes, and landscapes are incredible. Outstanding DOF, comp, tones, texture, the whole works! Also, excellent PS here. I love this photo, because I feel like I'm standing right there in the field! Thank you for the rework (fun to see) and comment on my "moody blue" pic. Looking forward to more posts. Best regards.

Sarah

Jason v.d.Meer   {K:1793} 8/3/2005
wonderful composion!

PK- Photos   {K:13257} 8/8/2005
Hi Carsten, like your landscape and field photos, your sky looks always so dramatic. Interesting to read how you worked on it in PS, thanks for your Tipp. The Canon10-22 wide lense works well for the right perspective, I like it more than my 17-40.
Like your portfolio:)

Ciao, Pia :)

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 8/8/2005
Pia, thanks for dropping by. The 17-40/4L is still my best lens, and I use it when I have the time to change lenses and have it available (the EF-S 10-22 is always mounted on my 300D), for scenes that dont need super wide perspective. Optically, the 17-40/4L is unsurpassed and one of the best zooms ever built

PK- Photos   {K:13257} 8/8/2005
P.S. schöne Gegend in Mariazell:)
Wieder was gelernt:)
Liebe Grüsse, Pia

svend videbak   {K:7376} 8/17/2005
Wow Carsten, this is a very impressive picture. It seems to me you are making great strides with digital photography. The clarity is most impressive. The colour work is surely not subtle, but very intelligently done in keeping with the nature of the subject. This is the sort of photographic treatment that is very much in demand in advertising and magazine circles at least in Helsinki. Technically, this is looking very professional indeed. Rgds, Svend

zane anderson   {K:620} 8/17/2005
i realy like this picture
thanks for explaining how you did it

Sally Morgan   {K:9219} 8/22/2005
Really stunning - I like the great clarity (focus) throughout the photo, I like your choice of toning and the small amount of colour you've allowed to come through - it's really special.

Fadel J   {K:13605} 9/14/2005
Wow this is very powerful!! your recent uploads are simply astonishing as expected Carsten!!
