Well, it is anyway a nostalegic shot hamed,
there are good elements you have used to craet this dramatic feeling in this shot:
indeed the most important one is Perspective (that's distracted by the wide view of your camera and distracted lines in upper part )
then using big empty space in foreground and the feet of setting girl works perfect for this shot.
balancing the light and good exposing (in this hard position/location)is the other good element.

I like your up-close-and-wide-angle approach.

Are these people you know? I mean, the 1D isn't exactly a quiet discreet camera, so how do you photoraph without getting noticed?
