really beautiful. Excelent composition! I didn't even notice the noise untill I read your description, so don't worry about. Its really not bad. Technically the reasons why the sky in general is noisy is because it usually contains a lot of blue and the blue elements on the image sensor tend to have more and larger noise. But mostly because a very even, unicolor areas shows the noise best. The noise is the same everywhere, but a busy texture or just normal structures in a photo will make the noise less visible to our eye because noise and detail are very similar.

Great composition, looks like it took a good eye to see this shot.
Based on your camera alone I will try to answer your question. To my knowledge that camera has always received good ratings, so there probably is a way to fix it. Sometimes, however, with digital I seem to find that in something like a sky it is impossible to avoid some noise.
I am sorry if you already know all of this.
I would first check what the ISO is set at on your camera. The lowest rating will get the best quality shot with the least noise, but you will lose valuable shutter speed. On any digital camera, except SLR's, the sensor that takes the photo is extremely small compared to a 35mm film. That is why if you look at most lenses they will say a very small number, like 4-8mm I believe. This is usually fine for the lowest ISO setting, but such small sensors cannot handle the higher ISO. Digital SLR's have less noise and therefore better quality (and insane prices!) because the sensor is much bigger, yet most are still smaller than 35mm.
Another big thing that adds noise is the post production enhancements. If you use any filters or enhancements like contrast or unsharp mask in a program like Photoshop, noise is inevitable. This is where you must decide on what makes the photo looks the best without compromising much noise.
Some programs have a noise reduction type of filter. The only time I have used this it make the whole picture look somewhat drawn or painted, however it may work well in this shot because there is not a whole lot of varying colors and depths.
Well I may have gotten a little carried away there, but I hope I helped.

I truly did want an answer as it seems that most of my shots that include a lot of sky seem to come out noisy! I know low light can cause noise, but even daylight shots with a lot of sky seem to have noise in them. Due to yours and David's explanations I understand why! I also did use the unsharp mask and did a litt clarifying. Unfortunatley, with the camera I am using, I usually do have to clarify and sharpen my images, somewhat, to bring out the detail.

Melanie, when I saw the thumbnail, it looked like a tiger cub, like a scene from the Lion King or something. That grass makes it look like it was taken on some prarie(sp?) in Africa. Great work!

The higher the ISO, generally the more noise. There is software (such at Neat Image, which I use) that excels at removing noise, but going too far can create surreal, plastic-looking faces.
A great shot brilliantly framed, though.

Paul, you know what, I'm not sure what the ISO was on this. I just sort of took it on a whim in auto mode before the cat left! LOL
I DO notice that the noise is more noticeable AFTER upload. I just uploaded another that didn't appear noisey at all before I uploaded it and after I uploaded it you could see the noise AND the colors were flatter.

Ah, if you note more noise in the scaled image than the original, it's due to compression artifacts. I usually set my JPEG compression at '8' or 80% of whatever value they choose, which works well.

Love this! Noise included! The top of the cat does look a little soft but he totally compliments the jagged edges of the plants. Great colors too.
