About Pardon the borders... what ya see is what ya get.

This photo of comet Hale-Bopp is the hardest photo I have ever chased.
The exposure is 16 minutes long on a home jury rigged, motorized tracker and with two rifle scopes used for alignment and guiding during the exposure. An absolute pain to use, but on my last attempt nailed it......... wind and clouds arrived for the next few weeks as the comet sank too low in the sky to be photographed again.

I couldn't figure how to catagorize this photo......... I suppose technically, landscapes is as close as I could get.

What an effort. Congratulations.

The big difference is that silly "L" on the 300MM Canon Lens.
300mm lens $600
300mm 'L' lens $1,200
Difference is that without the 'L', the blue tail would almost not be visible.
I took 3 shots that night from a logging landing 75 mioles away from here. Two were with 'L' series lenses, and one was from a Canon 70 to 210 lens. The 20-35 'L' and 300 'L' showed the blue tails, but the 70 to 210 didn't do very well......... it was very faint.

Thank you for the very nice comment.
........ I would show you the tracking device.......... but I don't like snickering! Hee hee. I coupled together two Skill Twist electric screwdrivers achieving a grand speed of two RPM and added a 6 volt battery and a couple of potentiometers and LEDs to make my Flintstone contraption. It took me quite a few partial rolls of film and a couple of months to figure out what I was doing wrong. I kept getting shakey star trails......... but it all came together on this last attempt. I was thrilled beyond words when I opened the box of slides........ three out of three on my very last attempt before the bad weather set in.
I will post the 20-35 photo tomorrow night.

That's no Flintstone contraption! That's fine Engineering work!! Spectacular result Randy. "Above your head" may be a good project to put this in.

Randy Libner   {K:1691} 7/23/2005
Lilly... I forgot to mention the Skill Twist screwdrivers use sets of 'planetary' gears.
My reaction upon opening that box of slides for the first time is reflected in all of your comments........ I was, and still am, so thrilled with the results.
Thank you all again so much for you comments. I must step out now and go buy meeself a larger hat. :)
