Judy,
I'm sure there are a few ways of doing it...maybe and most likely better than the way I do it, but here goes:
In Photoshop or whatever photo program you are using. I go to Select All, then I copy the picture. I then go to New, and usually it will give me the dimensions of the photo I've been working on. I usually add to those dimensions by 25 pixels. You can make yours larger or smaller, depending on the look you want. I click ok and it gives me a blank white picture. I go to my paint can and click on the white to color it black...(sometimes I just leave it white.) Then I go to Edit and click on Paste. In Photoshop it centers the picture. Then I Merge the Layers and save it.
