Thanks Cary - A little difficult to judge the focus when you are using a view finder without glasses (trifocals) and the dioptometer (or whatever the heck that little gadget is that is suppose to help you use the lens without your glasses) isn't strong enough. I will probably need to get the attachment that gives you more focus range in the view finder. Of course it could also be that I really needed to stand back further. Keep forgetting that this camera is powerful enough to do a macro without having to be nose-to-nose with your subject. I think that what you mean by soft focus is that it is not a clear crisp image. Right?

Wow Janice with the challenges you were faced with, I would say the results are excellent! Yes, soft focus meaning the entire image seems to be slightly out of focus, meaning you either were not steady enough for the shutter speed, or maybe too close for the lens's capability. but it could be just my monitior too. Not your monitor Cary - you are correct, the focus is soft - went in and pulled up the original and the whole shot has a soft focus. Thanks for your reply with your suggestions as to cause. It was probably both. Will play around today - shouldn't be too difficult for me to duplicate.
By the way, this upload is a 200% enlarged crop of just a portion of a larger floral bouquet. Thanks for the helpful suggestions Cary. Jan

Beautiful yellow flower. It does seem a bit soft in focus. Do you use a sharpening program after you are done correcting? Don.

8 mg pixels - Canon 18-55 mm lens for the Digital Rebel XT. I believe I took the camera off of auto, and set it on the P creative mode setting. Put manual focus on and set that to the center. Wasn't brave enough to change anything else. Behind the lens is a rank beginner with a new camera, and only a smattering of knowledge. Hmmmm, sounds like a recipe. Seriously, really appreciate you taking the time to try and figure out what I need to try not to do with my next shot. Jan

Don - I have used PS to sharpen some - but didn't on this one. This was an enlarged crop (200%) of a portion of a bouquet of flowers - and should have used the unsharp mask to tweak it a little. The original, as I told Cary, has a soft focus too. Combination of things I should have done and didn't is probably what I did wrong. Do like the composition tho.

Janice, I have used that lens and found the manual focus to be very difficult to get right. As I started using the auto focus more, I liked that feature for my florals since i could selctively focus in a tight shot, really liked that, Cary

Cary - thought I'd take a few classes on how to use this camera (expecially as they are free) and I know that my next major purchase for the camera will be a macro lens. Really appreciate you for taking the time to comment. Thanks bunches. Jan
