Janice, I don't know enough about camera settings to offer any suggestions. However, I can say that I really like this. She looks like she's waving to you. I actually don't find the darkened corner distracting as it dies look quite natural.

Janice - I think the tones and shadows are very nice and add to the idea that the Momma is protecting her brood. I wouldn't change anything about the image.

Mom...get Dad's ladder, put it as close to the door as you can. Dad has changed lights and she hasn't fled. Then use your new telephoto lens with the mini-tripod, when you have the bottom for it..LOL, then put your ISO up to about 400 or 800 (try them both) and put the timer on. She is usually extremely still. :) That is probably too much? :) LOL You know me with running after birds. LOL

Thanks for the advice Roberto - except my camera and that new lens do not like each other. When I put it on the camera, I keep getting an Err 99 message, and the camera will not work. The explanation in the book is either the battery (take out and put back in--did that to no effect) or the message is due to using a non-Canon lens. Will take it back to the Camera shop tomorrow and see if they can figure out what is what. I know how to adjust the ISO - will have to read about how to set the timer. :-) Mom

I was also thinking about the ladder and the telephoto lens :-)
Besides of that: shooting on an overcast day will probably give a better result than with sunny weather, because the shadows will be less pronounced.

Janice set your meter to spot metering and see if that will open up the shadows. Maybe you could use a flash fill? I bet you can take lots of pictures and she won't leave. Don.

Thanks Don - will add your advice to my photo hints doc that I keep. Unfortunately, unless she decides to lay and hatch another brood that little fledgling was bigger than I thought. I do believe that I say it leave the nest today. Mom is gone too. Darn the luck! (As Rob would say.) I know by next year's nesting season I will have more experience and will perhaps be fortunate enough to get a better shot. The day was overcast too - but her little corner of the world is always in deep shadow. Jan
