About She's getting fuled up as I recall. It is currently red tide, and you can see the red cast in parts of the water. A close friend just became a Stevedore and invited us to take a cruise and share his enthusiasm for the harbor. He asked if I would take some pictures of ships for him. We were there mid-day and it was tough to get the kind of moody light I like. It was very hazy, and so I enhanced it by adding a little more (white gradient mask). I like the feel of the ship basking in the sunlight breaking through fog. Can't wait to go back for a sunset cruise to get some dramatic light. This harbor is spectacular. Many ships call her to serve a local population of about 17 million, and it is an extremely busy port.

Great photo Antonia, I like your use of the mask to seperate the ship from what could be a distracting background - well done.

Very cool shot Antonia. Love this for that reason too - breaking free kind of feel.

Superb lighting, the gradient mask is very effective here ! It looks as if you unmasked the effect a bit for the front part of the ship, to get a realistic impression of depth. Very nice !

The atmosphere si really particular in your shot, and this is what is giving all the power to the subject.. Nicely seen, and well done. The colors are wonderful

Hi Toni,
Nice work on the haze effect on this shot. The composition and mood are really nice too.

It's amazing how large these boats are. I got to see one very close up a few years ago. My friend got a new Hobie Cat (catamaran 16' I think) I got invited to be in the trapeze of the Cat. We sailed right beside one of these tankers that was docked in Toronto harbour. I'll never forget that feeling. Too bad I couldn't take pictures. I was hangning on for dear life!

Wonderful shot!!! Even an industrial landscape can be very nice even pretty to look at... ;-D!!! Good colors and I really like the haze effect you've used, love the panoramic crop and the composition is excellent.... well captured!!!

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:29943} 8/5/2005
Thanks Carsten...you are right...I unmasked for the water in the foreground and from the front of the ship to the rear, although as it happened, even unmasked the rear quarter of the ship had the haze on its own -- it wouldn't unmask...lol!

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 8/6/2005
nice work.. I like how the ship stands out against the rest of the scene.. excellent

Randy Lorance   {K:24958} 8/6/2005
I find this very appealing and don't know if I can really put my finger on why...guess it just all comes together so well. Looks like it would be a large wall hanging in a maritime office.

Randy...what a generous compliment! Perhaps I should send it to the shipowners (if I knew who they were :) Antonia

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 8/6/2005
Hi Toni, The white gradient mask does place the center of attention nicely on the freighter. The line the shadow creates on the bow is excellent. I'm always fond of those industrial shots. Good shot, considering the difficult lighting situation, I know those hazy situations all too well, and am always disappointed by the outcome of my shots during those days, but I would've been very happy with this one....:) Returning during sunset? Hmmm. Maybe even more difficult... The harbour lights could be very interesting indeed, but even more difficult to shoot from a moving boat.

As to the white gradient mask, it does look like a circular gradient around the boat. Although this places the center of attention on the freighter nicely, the interference with the water on the left side makes it look a bit unnatural. Have you tried a linear gradient, starting half way the water, running up into the sky, excluding only the turrets of the ship (if that's the right phrasing) Just curious; it would perhaps make the shot less surprising, which might not create the desired effect...

Cheers,

Hugo

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:29943} 8/6/2005
Hi Hugo, thanks for your thoughtful comment. What was I thinking!? It is a good thing you reminded me about the movement of the boat during sunset cruise...hahahaha. I need to find a way to take pictures of this harbor when the light is right. Many times I traverse the bridges during dusk (there are 4 of them to drive over), and the show of lights, boats and bridges is just spectacular. The Port Authorities don't permit pedestrians up on the bridges, and of course access to the piers and boats is restricted, so the cruise is the first time I've had a chance and the light was awful. I will employ the services of my friend the longshoreman and see if he can help me with access issues and be my tour guide -- and I'll take my tripod!

As for the gradient mask, what you are telling me is that the haze/fog wraps too far forward at the right and left edges....correct? I actually did use a linear gradient, and worked to avoid the look you see -- but from your view I know that I still need to go further. FYI, I was using shorthand for what I actually did. I added a layer of solid white, then I used the linear gradient tool in layer mask to mask out the white, trying different opacities and levels. I actually did struggle a bit with the haze on permimeters, trying to wrap the ship sufficiently without a linear look to the fog. I can push the haze back a bit more at the perimeters, varying it so that it doesn't look manufactured, and that should solve it.

Thanks again for the observation -- very helpful.

Antonia

The ship stands out so well amidst the haze which surely makes it the center of attention. Great shot.

very good work Antonia, perfectly done in my opinion, really an enjoyable picture to see, especially considering the bad light available.

Neil Dolman   {K:26883} 8/14/2005
Hi Antonia, very nice image and it really enhances the size of this ship by using the wide format. I like the treatment of the haze, it too works well. Did you get some good sunset shots?
Many thanks for your comment & best wishes Neil
