Spectacular fisheye shot, Hugo!!
Magificent clarity and detail in the buildings!
A classic shot of NYC!
Best regards, Chris

Galal El Missary   {K:84194} 8/6/2005

Riny  Koopman   {K:19998} 8/6/2005
I like the way you angled this very nice details and clarity.

My regards Riny

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 8/6/2005
great shot from the empire state building.. the fish eye lens really makes the image.. great capture

Toshi    {K:12024} 8/6/2005
Amazing perspective - the use of the fisheye helps emphasize the shape of the earth. Love the use of black and white, excellent tones. Great shot Hugo.

greg collins   {K:11930} 8/6/2005
Nice shot. Heaps to look at. Love the round effect. Nothing like this in little Dunedin NZ.
Greg

Carolyn Wiesbrock   {K:14051} 8/6/2005
An amazing shot, what more can I say..but I would like to know how you accomplished this.

Exceptional work!

Todd Entrikin   {K:1437} 8/6/2005
awesome!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/6/2005
Hi Carolyn, I didn't do much to this shot. The distorted skyline is the effect of the super wide angle 10.5 mm lens, straight out of the camera. All I did was crop it square, desaturate and work on the levels a bit.

Cheers,

Hugo

Manu     {K:13094} 8/6/2005
Well, well, well, Hugo...easily my favourite shot I've seen from your portfolio. Full of detail, excellent composition, power and inspiration...excellent stuf. Spot on conversion to BW making full use of the lens...congratulations, my friend.

Cheers

Manu
PS Crop a bit of the sky? Not sure..?

NN     {K:26787} 8/6/2005
Hi Hugo! This is my favourite of the fisheye shots so far. The chosen lens makes this big city look even bigger, like a huge part of our globe :) Fascinating!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/6/2005
Hi Manu, Thanks, my friend! Cropping the sky? hmmm. Interesting thought. I'd need to try that... Per attached, the original shot, straight out the camera, with a cropped sky. I maintained the full width of the shot, primarily because I think with a cropped sky, the width emphasises the vastness of Manhattan even more. Is this what you had in mind?

Cheers,

Hugo

T L   {K:18928} 8/6/2005
The minute i saw it in reminded me of a cover of a CD that i once saw, but i can't remember which one. Anyway, this is so great - and New york seem suddenly a bit smaller... :-)

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/6/2005
Hi Tiro, now you mention it, that CD cover does ring a bell. Can't remember which one either.... That'll keep bugging me, until I remember... Thanks...:) heheheheh.

Cheers,

Hugo

Petal Wijnen   {K:47835} 8/6/2005
Super shot!!!! Now this is the way to use a fisheye (I don't usually like fe shots... but love this one... ;-D), superb view, wonderful in B&W!!!! Big Apple indeed!!! Great tones, excellent composition... well done!!!!

Renato Renato   {K:4759} 8/6/2005
fantastica!
congrate ciao R

Carolyn Wiesbrock   {K:14051} 8/6/2005
Yes I realize all that by looking at this, but how did you gain this perspective from what level, height, etc?

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:178244} 8/6/2005
hi..

your fantastic possibility of the wideangle effect..
in the up of the skyscraper..
your idea and mood are so perfect!
the details and the clearness so good!
I like it..
have a nice week end my friend
roby

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/6/2005
Ah.... I took this shot from the top of the Empire state building, holding the camera through the fence. You'll see a part of the ESB in the lower left (and right) corner. Camera was pointing almost vertically down...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17525} 8/6/2005
I like the full sky view best. This is one amazing shot, and the full sky version supports the vastness of the New York cityscape.

Hugo, this shot, along with all your other recent city shots, is sure to sell a few fisheye lenses!

A real treat!

karen clarke   {K:18847} 8/6/2005
It just doesn't get any better than this. I feel as if I am on the edge about to make the leap. I love the curve as if you are viewing the planet from outerspace using a magnifying glass over the city. Exceptional piece~

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 8/6/2005
That is a wonderful view. Glad to see it here as I will never get there. Thanks for sharing. Very well done. Don.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/6/2005
Hi Don, your comment intrigues me... Why wouldn't you get / go there? Just curious...;)

Cheers,

hugo

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 8/6/2005
Hi Hugo,

Long time 'no see'!

And I see you are really 'flying high' with the awards, literally also....

You are really having a great time with your fisheye lense. (I'm so jealous!) LOL

REally a spectacular view, I prefer the black and white over the color, and I also prefer the view as you have it here.

Very nice image, Hugo
Have a GR8 day and evening!
Lori :)

Bea Friedli   {K:9816} 8/6/2005
fabulous !!!!!!! kudos on the well deserved awards. great shot ! 7 ++

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59985} 8/6/2005
I agree with Tim. I get a enough dizzy feeling ad want to look another direction ;) Even though i?m not sensitive for hights, but this is far too much :) Excellent Hugo and congrats for well deserved awards!!!!

Jeanette

James Hager   {K:6285} 8/6/2005
Very nice. The B&W really works, and I love the shadow from your shooting platform. :)

Manu     {K:13094} 8/6/2005
That's exactly what I was thinking, Hugo. But I think both versions carry their own merits. The original has an eliptical appearance whilst the BW version has more depth and feeling of claustraphobia....once again photography like most art forms can be interpreted in so many ways.

Cheers for now

Manu

Roger Williams   {K:83282} 8/6/2005
You came back with a bang... and to a nice welcome! An ideal scene for the fisheye... that 10.5mm lens is enough to get me thinking about a DSLR to use it on!!

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59985} 8/6/2005
Oh mamma mia - another one - congrats again!!!!

Jeanette

Nour El Refai   {K:13681} 8/6/2005
this is just perfect, it deserve all the awards with no thinking, one of the best cityscapes i've seen

Khalid Saif   {K:1074} 8/6/2005
Congrats for the 3 in 1 award :)
& it well deserved!
Really nice capture there...

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 8/7/2005
I have no desire to visit NY. We get three NY TV stations and sure don't need anything that they have there. Besides I am getting too old for that ratrace. Thanks Don.

Bradley Prue   {K:30312} 8/7/2005
wow...

It takes large vision to capure the expanse of NYC in such an encompassing way! When I sit back, admiring the way you see the city, I cannot help but feel like I have a better understanding of what this medium is all about. Your presentation is as comfortable as popcorn in a big bowl. It's all there, it's wonderful to look at, and there is an overwhelming sense that NOTHING is being missed. That's huge.
This shot spectacular, and is so deserving of the awards. Congrats, Hugo! ...Brad

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/7/2005
Hi Bradley, I shot this through the eyes of a foreigner, like the rest of the NYC series. Really loved being there.... Somehow, the B&W fitted / fits with the way I experienced my time in New York.

I enjoyed reading your description a lot. In respect to this shot, I never looked at it that way, as I got rather frustrated with my fellow tourists pointing their nifty little cameras through the grating flashing happily at the city (to no avail) at the exact same point where I had planned to take a shot. So when the spot was vacant, I took my shot, and rushed down.... Don't think I'll ever get up there again, but I'll surely return to NYC.

Cheers,

Hugo

tom rumland   {K:14874} 8/7/2005

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/7/2005
Hi John, I haven't used despherizing in Nikon caputure yet, but heard some good things about it. I'll have a go at tit sooner or later, though. Have you? And what do you think? (or was that the reason you asked?)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/7/2005
Ah, yes, I see... I really do, As a foreigner and a tourist, I looked at it differently, and I did like what I saw...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Bravo Hugo, its special and unique, optimal choice of the 10,5mmNikon. And Congrats:)

Nice sunday,
Pia:)

Richard Thornton   {K:26442} 8/7/2005
Hey, Hugo . . . You got WAY up there! Consider the vertigo as being induced in many of us. You chose a pretty good time of day so that the suns angle made the buildings stand out in relief. The shadow of the building (the one you occupied?) in the foreground is especially interesting. I will put this lens on my "wish list" (it's a long list).

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 8/7/2005
Hi Hugo,

what can I say? Triple award, this says something ;-)

I'm really envious somehow. You made it. The ultimate view down from the Empire State. That's a fave for me. THE fave.

Speechless.

Thilo

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 8/7/2005
congrats on all of the awards.. wish I had a fisheye.. heck, did not even have a wide angle with me when I went to the top of the empire state building before....great capture again

Telmo Domingues   {K:9639} 8/7/2005
Well... The three awards take my words away! ;))))

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/7/2005
Mine too.... Good to hear from you again!

Cheers,

Hugo

Pat Ziegler   {K:21578} 8/7/2005
Looks like three for three to me. We call that a "Hat Trick" Congrats/Congrats/Congrats

Vitigo may have been a good title. Now I'm off to shop for a fish eye....

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/7/2005
Hi Pat, that Hattrick was quite a surprise....:) I do agree, the title is rather off, three corners seems a bit far fetched with this shot. Then again, the selection of images swiched in due course. Thought of renaming this one to "pin cushion", but Vertigo would also be appropriate. Need to think of an appropriate name for the entire series, though. I'm working on it...:(

Cheers,

Hugo

Jose Ignacio (Nacho) Garcia Barcia   {K:92155} 8/7/2005
magnificent. great composition.

Joggie van Staden   {K:41275} 8/7/2005

Joggie

Angelo Villaschi   {K:49617} 8/7/2005
Nothing left to say except "Congratulations", Hugo.

Congratulations!

You seem to have photographed some previously undetected magnetic field. It has attracted all known UF award badges to the picture! :))

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 8/8/2005
Hi Hugo, this is a true WOW picture :)Absolutely fantastic view,NY seems to be an island. Sorry for being so behind with comments...and my congratulations for the awards! You well deserve it.

Neal Nye   {K:15827} 8/8/2005
Congratulations on all the awards! They are well deserved.

Alastair Bell   {K:29571} 8/8/2005
Superb Hugo! That fisheye really has come into its own in this shot... There is such a feeling of being on top of the world. Or perhaps this is a manmade porcupine with quills poking out in all directions? Currently in defensive more following 9/11?
Its a wonderful image and easy to see why it has attracted all the awards it so richly deserves.

Congratulations on your foresight to take this, your skill in achieving it and your winning of the three awards...

Alastair

Neil Dolman   {K:26883} 8/8/2005

Bravo!
Congratulations!!!

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47543} 8/8/2005
This shot as of a ceremonial dance, where the pattern created by the tall buildings draw you into the picture and sweeps you around the frame. I think you did very well and obviously spotted the potential for creating a striking with the group of skyscrapers, then capturing the proceeding from the perfect angle view not too low so that you can?t see the circular shape, but IMO a bit high that you begin to loose the energy of the real altitude feelings of the buildings. Saying that the way shot fills the frame and how low building patch of earth is slightly off-center, approcited method and superbly executed.
You have 3 titles here, its time to hire one of them at least: )
Saeed

Ameed El-Ghoul   {K:42188} 8/8/2005
This is an outstanding picture Hugo, simply perfect, excellent angle as well,
Very well composed and captured,
Regards,

Massimo Di Maggio   {K:-56668} 8/8/2005
Hi Hugo, yes, I?m a bit quiet lately, too many things to do in my family and the rest of the time spent taking shots ;) This photo gives me the sensation to be an eagle flying over the city, not only for the height, but also for the great angle of your lens, it would not have been the same with a 50 mm ;) I like the richness of details that make me think to the many people working, talking, walking, laughing and crying down there? Bye, Max

Kessia & Morgan UVA   {K:7265} 8/9/2005
WOW!!! the view from the empire state building is already awesome but the way you've captured it with the fisheye and in b&w make it a million times more interesting! it looks like manhattan stretches on forever beyond the horizon! really great perspective and an amazing take on what could easily turn out as a very ordinary shot! into my favs for sure! Kessia

Ray Patrick E. Garcia   {K:1643} 8/9/2005
Wow! You really know how to use your Nikkor fisheye lens. Great capture Hugo! It trully is awesome!!!

Paolo

Todd Miller   {K:16464} 8/9/2005
beautifully shot Hugo....love that fisheye too, works perfectly here. i think i personally would have cropped the top a bit-for me the drama is in the city, and the sky here almost distracts. it's quite a wonderful shot as is...

and thanks for your input on my recent photo. your advice is greatly appreciated.
cheers,
todd

Burak Tanriover   {K:16604} 8/9/2005

AJ Miller   {K:45206} 8/11/2005
Didn't comment when I looked the first time as I was just over-awed. Now look: EC, SC AND BIP!!! This reminds me of the sort of posters we used to put up when we were students. Time to do the decent thing and add you to my Friends - I appreciate very much the honesty and integrity of your comments (and your photos of course!)
AJ

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/12/2005
Hi AJ, Thanks for your "vote of confidence" Much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185005} 8/12/2005
Hi Todd, thanks for your comment, and I appreciate your suggestion. I've posted the original shot, with the cropped sky in my reply to Manu. Interesting suggestion, which I guess would also work well. I chose to post process it as is mainly because of the square format. It's one out of a series of 45 square B&W shots, mostly shot with a 6x6 medium format camera. The consistency throughout the series made me square this one too.

What I like most about the suggestion is that (once again) I realise how subjective composition is, within the series, I don't think there's an alternative but to crop it square, but as a stand alone, I think you have a very good point.

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Hugo

Patrick Jacobson   {K:29151} 8/12/2005

A great picture with amazing perspective and lovelly greyscale.

Bruce Harper   {K:5305} 8/16/2005
Great tonality in the B&W & the distinctive shadow of the Empire State building shows exactly where you were when taking the photo. Congrats on the awards - perhaps you could put it in the 'Best picture of 2005' if UF create one & pick up another award!

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 8/16/2005
Oh my goodness! Look at what YOU did!!!!!! Nothing more to say after 101 comments but FANTASTICO!!!! Bravo! Congratulations Hugo for the triple decker awards. Warmest personal regards.

There was an album with a similar graphic vibe but memory fades here as well?
But this definitely belongs in an album cover ? not the puny space accorded to cd?s? but the great canvases of the old vinyl albums. A smart artistic director would use it as the cover choice for a re-issue of a grand classic tune? Mozart?s Requiem?
This is a big, impressive picture Hugo, well worthy of all accolades.

Hi Carlos, Thanks for your comment.... I still haven't figured out which album cover either. It's beginning to nag me, so if the album title comes to mind, please let me know...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

This fish-eye view bowls me over and as judged by the comments, everyone else is quite amazed as well. The choice of B/W was great, as colour would have been busy and distracting. I am impressed by the detail and clarity of the highrises.
