this is a very good true B&W, the use of ND filter to balance make the image very equilibrated in light with excellent tones.

The grad ND makes indeed a very interesting effect, controls dynamic range and creates a beautiful lightness gradient in the sky. Not looking unnatural, an excellent B&W landscape, the eyes are led nicely to the background. And, of course, a magnificent scenery !

wow, nice shot. I was wondering, is using 5 stops of ND grad a lot? I only have a 2-stop one (and have just started experimenting with it, I haven't even developed the slides yet!) and from this image which is great using 5 stops, I wonder if 2 will be enough for the photos I took! (I suppose of course it depends on the situation...)
Your photos of the Pyrenees are amazing.

Marc, thanks for your comments. The amount of filtration required will depend on the situation. In this case the mountainside on the right was in shade whilst the sky top left was brightly lit. I used a handheld spot meter to measure the difference in brightness between the two and it was about seven stops which is unusually severe. It's best to have the sky 1 to 1.5 stops brighter than the foreground and I chose to use 5 stops to give me the result I was looking for on this occasion. 2 to 3 stops is usually sufficient when working with a partially lit foreground.
