About In Saint John's Cathedral in MN.

Forgot to pack a tripod...grrrr

This was an extremely low light situation as are most Cathedrals.

Sooo, I did what I used to do when photographing weddings. Put the camera on the floor and angle up a bit.

Not quite lined up perfectly as I would prefer. But, this was the best out of three.

Hope you all had a GR8 weekend.

Lori :)

I like the perspective in here and the original color tones.
Very good architecture shot Lori,
Khaled.

M.Gündüz Soyusatici   {K:531} 8/8/2005
As said before, I like the perspective and you did best you could. Scenes like these beyond the range/capability of the camera used.
For architectural pics go for 35mm SLR in small format or a DSLR.
My best wishes,

Gregory McLemore   {K:25112} 8/8/2005
Magnificent capture, wow, low light, the composing is as fine as I've seen, your star continues to shine, masterfully done my friend..

Ellen Smith   {K:14418} 8/8/2005
Lori I understand some of these places won't let you take a tripod in to begin with. How about a rice/bean bag then you can mash it to meet your needs. Excellent shot by the way despite the low light.

ARMANDO ALCÁZAR   {K:42656} 8/8/2005
wonderful pic and perspective my dear friend, I like a lot, beautiful arcgitecture too. Congrats and God bless you

Chris Hunter   {K:25631} 8/9/2005
Nice work, Lori - esp. when I hear you didn't use a tripod!!

Cheers,
Chris

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 8/9/2005
Hi Lori,

Excellent idea of using such an exreme low camera position. Not only to keep the camera steady, but it also creates a sensational perspective. Never thought of that before. I always wedge my camera on one of the benches, capturing the back of the benches in front of me.

It came out really well. Very good shot, and thanks for the tip:)

Cheers,

hugo

Very nice shot with all due lighting emphasis on your subject, Lori.

(oh, it's spelled Altar). ;)

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 8/9/2005
LOL LOL

Paul, thanks for pointing that out!!!!
Can't believe I did that!
But, I corrected it......

Thanks again,
Lori :)

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 8/9/2005
Hi Ellen,

Yes, I've used the bean bags many times!
Didn't give that a thought when I was packing either. WHAT was I thinking?? LOL

Thanks, glad you liked this one,
Lori ;)

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 8/9/2005
Hi Hugo,

Glad you could use a tip. I first learned about this long ago at a seminar. Of course the camera I used for weddings was bigger and heavier making it easier to do. I just used to sit the camera on the floor and put a pencil under the front, worked every time! It makes an aisle shot of the wedding GREAT! And it's centered.

Have a GR8 day/evening Hugo,
Lori :)

I'm glad all your wedding experience equipped you to deal with situations when practicing real photography. Ha. Just joking. I have a lot of repect for wedding photographers and the pressure and the dealing with all kinds of people, not all of them at their best. Then afterward, they want the one view you didn't get. This is a nice, symmetrical image and quite appropriate for this kind of subject. The tripod might have allowed an even slower shutter speed to gain more depth of field. But you know all that.

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 8/9/2005
That was the way when we were into weddings wasn't it. Make do with what you have. I never carried a tripod when shooting weddings. Beautiful old church. I used to double expose the bride and groom with and interior of the church. Don.

Hi Richard,

You are sooo 'RIGHT ON'........
Sounds like you also have some wedding experience. LOL

Can't believe I photographed them for 20 years!
Some techniques you just don't forget!

Lori :)

Bobby Mun   {K:3688} 8/10/2005
Hi Lori, when I first look at this picture, I like it... especially the low angle.... very good idea!

Me too... like to put my camera to time mode, place my camera on the floor and let it capture by itself... no worry of handshake....etc.

Good work!

Cheers! Bobby

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47543} 8/10/2005
The ground floor used to support your camera and to keep it still for the low light, slow speed shutter, the result is magnificent and excellent capture of beautiful internal architecture, superb. Saeed

Maria Luisa Vial   {K:36017} 8/10/2005

John Loreaux   {K:85782} 8/12/2005
This worked out well Lori! You improvised and came up BIG!!! Love the low angle! The detail is excellent for a low light shot!!! Really beautiful cathedral!!!No one around????
My best..............................John

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 8/12/2005
Hi John,
There were quite a few people wandering around.
I waited quite awhile for the peopleless shot!
Glad you like this one.
L:)

Teresa Moore   {K:10679} 8/13/2005
A beautiful cathedral! I have never been inside of one, but this is another "to do" on my list. Nice work, as always Lori.

Sony Kusumo   {K:7052} 8/13/2005
Well, IMHO, placing your camera onthe ground is the right things to do Lori. You capture the entire screen from ground up, enhancing the graciousness of the altar. Just a bit thought, what if it's cropped to the last arch, I think the other arch at the top is quite distracting (although it's also wonderful).

Beautiful capture my friend....

Ray Patrick E. Garcia   {K:1643} 8/15/2005
Love the very low angle. The colors are beautiful. Nicely done Lori.

Regards,

Ray
