About Two nights ago, I woke up in the middle of the night, with this idea in my mind. It's part of something I've been pondering over for quite a while now, and if all goes well, it's the basis of an entirely new theme for me.

This is a single shot, full frame (no crop). In Photoshop, I only applied some simple techniques with level adjustments and one soft light layer mode. Other than that, no photoshop involved.

I tried this first on a white surface, but the contrast between coin and surface was too low to work with, so I re-shot it using a black cardboard sheet.

Camera settings:

Focal length 105mm
Exposure mode: AV
Metering: Multi Pattern
Shutter-speed: 1.5 sec.
Aperture: f/18
EV: -0,3 EV
ISO: 100

Flash settings:
Repetitive, 5 bursts at 8Hz

Additional lighting: 500W Tungsten construction lamp.

Cheers,

Hugo

Lee Harris   {K:14694} 8/12/2005
Way cool Hugo.
Almost as if I was watching the coin spin right now.
5 consecutive flashes......hec I can barley get my camera to do 1.
BTW nice camera.....hope you like it.
Lee
To bad about removing the last image I really enjoyed it as a work of art not controversy.

timur basol   {K:5769} 8/12/2005

Hi Lee, thanks for your vote of confidence. I might re-upload it in about a year or so....:) The camera is excellent! Huge files, too. I'm really happy with it!

Cheers,

Hugo

Carolyn Wiesbrock   {K:14051} 8/12/2005
A wonderful experiment that gave the coins a sense of motion..very impressive!

Ian McIntosh   {K:38813} 8/12/2005
Nice. Relate to the ideas keeping one awake.

Angelo Villaschi   {K:49617} 8/12/2005
I totally missed your previous post, Hugo. A lot of this kind of stuff seems to go under my radar and then I am left wondering what the heck happened.

This is very good use of the strobe function of your flash. Well done. The results are nice.

I like this kind of stuff and have never tried it. What was the thinking behind the tungsten lamp, and what was its positioning?

Randy Lorance   {K:24958} 8/12/2005
As Lee said "way cool"! A challenge to all of us to study and learn. Definatey not a still life shot :) Aren't those middle of night thoughts energizing? Great results, I like that the background is not jet black but somewhat mottled. Next dice?

Randy

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/12/2005
Hi Randy, thanks! For the next one I have another shot lined up, but was still one short. Dice it is! Excellent idea! Much appreciated, my friend!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/12/2005
Hi Angelo,

The idea behind the tunsten lamp is that I needed some additional lighting, and I don't have decent strobes, yet. I placed it about 1 m right of the camera, relatively low. At 500W, it's close enough to simulate daylight.

Cheers,

Hugo

Manu     {K:13084} 8/12/2005
I see the old "de Wolf" brain is really kicking in here....very imaginative...can't wait to see the development of the new theme....well done Hugo.

Cheers

Manu

I made one similar many time ago Hugo not with a coin but with my wedding ring on black background. I had at that time a Kodak DX camera very automatic and it wat not possible to set anything technical, nevertheless the blurred movements designed a very graphical writings by which I inspired the title (which I forgot now). I thought it was here in Usefilm but probably it is one of my early image I posted in early times. Difficult to find it for me to show you

Antonio Trincone   {K:23167} 8/12/2005
here I find it; sorry fro bad quality just to show you my result

Pat Ziegler   {K:21592} 8/12/2005
Well done, I had the same vision once. Could never get it exactly right... It is a fun technique, I hope you master it...

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 8/12/2005
What a fun experiment this is, Hugo!
Awesome...I can't get over the fact that you woke up in the middle of the night thinking about this.

A dedicated photographer for sure.

Wonderful colors, detail and comp.

Love the movement of the coin.

EXCELLENT!!

Nice work,
Have a GR8 day/evening!

Lori :)

Cheers,

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 8/12/2005
Hugo, I bet you took a lot of shots to get this winner. Really a well done photograph. Don.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/12/2005
Hi Don, after thinking it through for the remainder of the night, I got it under controls (more or less) after about 20 shots..:)

Thanks,

Cheers,

Hugo

karen clarke   {K:18847} 8/12/2005
I like the idea behind this image, and the title is rather clever. I really love the blur that surrounds the coins. There is still enough coin shown in the rolling part of the image. I'm really curious as to how you got them to be so visible-esp. with the speed I am sure this coin was rolling at. I am extremely interested in what else you will do with this newest series. I think it has a lot of potential. Well done Hugo~

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 8/12/2005
Hi Hugo,

oh you've moved to the D2x? What's your impression in comparison to the D100?

ah, back to the picture. as far as I can judge it, very good motion blur concept shot. the black background adds some contrast. nice sparkling effects.

best wishes,
Thilo

Toshi    {K:12024} 8/12/2005
Hi Hugo, great shot! I actually attempted this a while ago but just couldn't get any decent results - too bright, out of the frame, etc. Great idea to use a black background to contrast the coin. Well thought out and nicely executed.

jude .   {K:14625} 8/12/2005
Intriguing experiment with an excellent result...am looking forward to seeing more.

Roger Williams   {K:83282} 8/12/2005
It will be interesting to see what develops from this idea. It looks very promising already.

Patrick Jacobson   {K:29151} 8/12/2005
Awesome idea here that worked out great! =) I like it alot and will surely try this out!

Cheers

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 8/12/2005

Nigel

Todd Miller   {K:16464} 8/12/2005
wonderful work here Hugo... the swirling light is fantastic. great idea...i'm wondering about your new theme you're speaking of. ideas brought to you during sleep?? that would be a very interesting series.

i'm afraid i have missed the controversial previous shot...hopefully you'll upload again sooner than later. sounds interesting.
cheers,
todd

Ameed El-Ghoul   {K:42188} 8/13/2005
This is a very nice capture Hogu and a creative Idea,
It takes one photographer to take a creative capture, and a thousand to say, yeah .. i can do that, but you are from the kind that get actually to innovate, not to imitate ;)
It is always pleasure to see your work dear,
Very well done
and thanks for sharing the technical info,
Today i learned something new,
Regards,

Nuno Murias   {K:5314} 8/13/2005
Thank you "teacher" Once again we all learn with your work. Inst what usefilm is all about??

greg collins   {K:11930} 8/14/2005
Great idea - I guess you have to go with an idea while it's fresh in your mind regardless of time. Love the movement but most of all the stars really caught my eye here. Nice work.
Greg

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47543} 8/14/2005
Speed and motion, captured with great arrangement, petty the only missing is the coin?s sound :)
Great as usual. Saeed

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 8/15/2005
great idea.. I like the motion of the coin.. too bad you could not have captured the coin a bit sharper although the sharpness of the coin is pretty good. I think you could crop even more of the image... great work

Joggie van Staden   {K:41275} 8/15/2005
A fine camera and one hell of a flash. Great results Hugo. The black background works perfectly as does the lateral movement of the coin. Very creative! Kind regards.
Joggie

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/16/2005
Thanks, Ameed, I think that's what Usefilm should be all about. I try to learn something every day, and most of the time, that's not too difficult....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/16/2005
Hi Todd, It wasn't that controversial, nor spectacular. Maybe I'll upload it again in the future, but I'm sure I can come up with better things....

This whole concept of ideas is build around the motion picture theme, using various techniques to capture a change over time. Still shooting, and I have only just started....:)

Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/16/2005
Hi Karen, The key to the visibility of the coin is the contrast between subject and background, as well as the repetitive flash bursts I used during the spin. It freezes the various position, capturing it's motion.

Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/16/2005
Hi Thilo, yeah, I recently got my hands on the "allmighty" D2x. Compared to the D100, it outclasses the D100 in every aspect, which is also it's limitation. In it's highest resolution, you create huge files, which also requires a huge amount of storage capacity. But the image quality and metering is superb. So much better than the D100....

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185008} 8/16/2005
Thanks, Joggie, I agree, both pieces of equipment are fantastic.... But shooting this was the fun of it...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 8/16/2005
It almost looks like a sepia Hugo...but I see your note about the lack of PS. I can almost hear the sound of the coin spinning. This is very appealing. It has the feel of a vintage image. Even though you look at it as an experiment, it is worth framing for me. Very creative and wonderful motion, tone, composition for a simple flip of a coin. Antonia

Petal Wijnen   {K:47835} 8/16/2005
Can't even begin to comprehend how you did this and even if... I'm 'lacking' in the camera department... multiple flash, yeah right.... ;-D!!! It's a super shot, well worth getting up for in the middle of the night... something I can grasp... LOL!!! Well done, good (remaining) clarity (I mean: it's blurred but clearly visible as a German two euro coin), great colors against that black background.... neat idea and well executed!!!!

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:178265} 8/17/2005
stunning blocked

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 8/17/2005
Hi Hugo,

thanks for the report. The only thing that really annoys me on the D70 is the metering. My F65 does a WAY better job in metering light. =)

best wishes, Thilo

Galal El Missary   {K:84194} 8/18/2005
Great shot , Great composition , Great photographer .....

is the german coin used on purpose ;) ??

sleepless nights could cause stress or nice projects...

quite interesting...

Take care

James Hager   {K:6285} 9/2/2005
Great series. I like this one and the scale the best because they have a nice sense of motion to go along with a nice composition. The dice shots also has a clear sense of motion, but the first image starts in an odd place for me. The "dancer" looks like you just used strobe for the heck of it.

Craig Hanson   {K:7794} 10/9/2005
You are a creative genius Hugo!!

Mark Sherman   {K:15484} 12/20/2005
That is magic.

The 500w Tungsten construction lamp made me laugh. no froo-froo lighting for magic.
