As promised a verion of the same theme using the same technique as I've used in the previous photos: A repetitive Flash Burst (5x at 8Hz). I thought it would be nice to see the differences in effect, as I got quite a few questions on this technique.

Great idea Hugo! LOL (not a "why couldn't I think of that", but a "wish I could do that")
Strong composition with the die skittering off the corner and your tradmark angled perspective.
Very nice motion caught and once again I like the mottled gray background. I prefer the simplicity of this non-flash photo.

Hi Galal, I also used the same three dice for the second shot, but as the flash fired 5 times during this exposure, freesing the motion of the dice as they rol to the different sides at regular intervals, it creates the impression that there are many more.

Thanks, Randy, it's not that difficult to do, especially the non flash one. That's just increasing the DOF, and setting up a tripod. From there on, it's just a matter of rolling the dice until it works out...:)

Hugo, This is a very interesting image with an informative about as well..Not only is the motion blur wonderful but you got it in a nice composition too, with the first dice leading the eye into the image...great long shutter speed effect, I love the one in the comment section also...again a nice angle and composition..very well done...:):)Linda

Looks like your on a roll here!!! Great shot (dubbele betekenis.... ;-D)!!! Neat 'natural' B&W, love the blurr, the tilt and the dark grey background.... well done!!! The only thing I don't care for is the 'throwing ring'... IMHO the shot would look better without it... As for which one: I like the upload better... the second one is a bit too bouncy for me... LOL!!!

Hi Thilo, I took a few with (my) hand in it, but with the slow shutterspeed, that turned out to be too much of a flesh coloured blur. Maybe it would work using the repetitive flash, but the timing is so dificult (the repetitive flash bursts folow each other rather quickly, and besides, in the few attempts I did, my hand was in focus, but translucent, too, as the majority of the exposure took place after I removed my hand from view. The only solution to do that is to take another shot directly after it, and combine the two.
Interesting thought, though. I'll keep it in mind, see if I can come up with something that would involve hands....

Hi Chris, This one is not so difficult. Just a plain dark piece of cardboard, the dish / coaster and a few dice. Adjust the aperture until you get the desired shutterspeed. (approx 1.5 seconds will do) then throw the dice (let them drop) and immediately release the shutter. No flash, just natural lighting in this one.
The one I attached to my comment below is something else. That would require a flash capable of emitting repetitive flash bursts at regular intervals (set mine to 5 bursts at 8Hz in that one) That freezes the dice in mid air. The approach is practically the same as the main photo. Set up the scene, focus, adjust aperture to meet the desired shutterspeed, and fire away. After the first shot, I played with the EV settings to fine tune the exposure.
Have a go! It's not that difficult!

Hi Petal, I only used the dish to contain the dice, not to let them bounce away too far. This was basically just a try out, and if I ever decide to shoot it properly, I'd use something more "casino" style.
The two images use a different techinque, using the repetitive flash technique in the second. I explained it in more detail in my reply to Thilo and Chris...

Hi Paul, Thanks. I took about 25 shots of this theme, approximately 10 using the repetitive flash thing, and 15 with just a slow shutter. I needed a few to tweak the camera settings.
Would like to see what you come up with!

Hi P.J., I found that the quality of the shot is strongly dependent on the contrast between the subject and the background. A textured background could work well, but then you could also play with the speed of the ball, or the frequency of the flash. Would love to see the result; a bit of structure through the ball could be nice, I think.
In the attached image, I used a trivial pursuit board as background. Not the best choice, but an available one. The translucency does add to the image, but also makes it a bit cluttered. I guess that happened to the ball and marble shot too. Would be nice to see your results, too!

Don't know which one I like better, this one or the one below! I've been going back and forth, I'm favoring the dice action below, especially how it goes off to the lower right. Almost an 'S' curve.
Yet, this one also is good comp.
They're both good Hugo.
I like the format of this one, and the diagonal...
In either case, again, great idea and finished work.

What I love about this and the one previously is that you actually have two things going on with the motion and the sound (I can hear the dice dinging against the metal). I like the use of the three dice, all in a line to give the effect of one dice moving forward, and yet still getting details of each of the three steps until you reach the end. Very clever series of work~

Clearly, you are keen on product photography... Thanks for sharing all the technical details. For me this one is the most eye-cathing of the series so far. A suggestion: what about making it a little darker, so that the background dissolves in the shadows? I tried it on my PC, and I liked it... But maybe I am a bit preoccupied with dark shadows, I just glanced to a photo book of Ralph Gibson that arrived yesterday :-)

There are looooooooots of good photographers around here. We all agree. Some bad too... Some use only the soul and few knowlegde to achieve the results they can... Others use only thecnical asepects on their photos...
Other guys, like you, put this two aspects toghether and achive the best...
Everyone knows Paco de Lucia, the GREAT spanish guitar player. I think he once said something like "I need technical knowledge so then I can forget about it!" In my bad english this means he needs to rule all technical issues in guitar playing, so he can forget them (technical issues) and let his soul rule his performance, without being worried about technical issues... This is perfection... Technically perfect BUT not only! Technique is used to express feelings and is not a goal itself... Maybe you don't understand this (due to my bad english speech...) but try!
This is what I think of most of your photos.
I think I made my point about this photo.

Great shot Hugo, and nice to see someone experimenting and pushing the limits. It reminds me of a song "roll the dice" but i can't remember who its by? Now if you could only do this for real and turn up with sixes all round. :)
