About I uploaded this rather jumbled image because I was attracted by the contrast between the hedge, being overrun by the Morning Glory vine, and the market garden with its tomatoes beyond. I used my best lens, the legendary Heliar, which Popular Photography said outperformed every other 50mm lens they had ever tested! And I'd like advice on how to make a better picture. I'll include a picture of the hedge itself in my next upload, with the same title.

Hi Roger, I like the morning glories in the front and the whole idea is good. To me it seems the middle area lost all it's saturation, can you add a little with PS just to bring out some of the color?
Respectfully yours,
Ellen

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 8/21/2005
Thank you, Ellen. I wonder if the central area is brighter and therefore slightly overexposed? I did try some "burn" but it started to get unnatural very quickly so I back-pedalled. I never have much luck with the tool for local saturation enhancement but I'll see what that does. If I reload, I'll lose your comment, though... I wondered if really blurring the out-of-focus area a lot more might improve things.

Ellen Smith   {K:14418} 8/21/2005
Maybe there just isn't that much color in that area. I'm going to give it a shot and I'll get back to you in a few.

Ellen Smith   {K:14418} 8/21/2005
Well here it is for all it's worth. You almost can't see the changes because of the size of the shot. I could email you a bigger one if you wanted? There isn't that much difference between the two and I don't necessaryly think mine is an improvement. The fact is you might not like the changes, and that's fine I had a chance to learn something at least.

Ellen Smith   {K:14418} 8/21/2005
Well I think I just found one of the new bugs. The attachment didn't go through.

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 8/22/2005
I'm grateful for your interest, time and effort. Too bad it didn't get through. But look what we are doing, between the two of us, to increase the number of comments on this previously folorn image!

Ellen Smith   {K:14418} 8/22/2005
Ah yes Roger san sometimes we must blow our own horn in order to draw attention to our humble offerings.

:-}

Audrey Reid   {K:5872} 8/22/2005
Hello Roger, I've had a play and fiddle with this image. It may not be the help you are looking for, in which case please forgive me for messing around on your image. Neither am I any good on PhotoShop, just my humble offering.

In my humble opinion, there is much going on in this rich image that the eye finds it hard to focus - and so find it a little flat.
For want of different depths, I divided the image into 4 sections, below is what I did.

Section 4 - blurred roughly & quickly. YOu'll need to do the outlines much more carefully then this :)

Section 3 - using selective colours, I increased the red. Decreased the neutrals.

Section 1 - using selective colours, increased the neutrals, decreased Magenta.

Section 2 - using selective colours, increased Magenta, blue. Decreased green.

I also used the burnt tool to darken the shadows a bit more.

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 8/22/2005
Thank you, Audrey. As you may have noted from my exchanges with Ellen, I had already considered futher blurring of the central area, but your selective blurring was something new and I think it could work quite well. Having seen the effect of some slight colour nudges, I think I could remove the pink in the sky and the strange tones in the Japanese roof and the distant treeline. Your PS skills are a marvel compared with mine! I just use plugins for specific tasks...

Ellen Smith   {K:14418} 8/22/2005
Ok Roger I'm giving this upload one more try. Wish me luck.

Ellen Smith   {K:14418} 8/22/2005
I forgot the instructions duh!
I open then duplicate, each dup is ON TOP of the old one, on the dup erase what you DON'T want to change. On that layer do what every you want, levels filters whatever.
Duplicate again and erase what you DON'T want to change from this layer.
I worked mine from the front to the back so my last dup is the trees and house top and sky.
Now you should have just the sky and things, do what you want to them and when your done flatten and it should look pretty good.

Other folks use masking but I have a mental block and don't get it or should say can't make it work for me, both. This is a poor mans masking technique.

I might have missed something but give it a try and let me know how this works for you.

Seems like you've had a bit of help with this one already, Roger, though for some reason the attachments are not uploading. There's some odd things going on at Usefilm at the moment. Most of my 'regulars' have either gone on holiday all at the same time or the recent 'down-time' and wierd warning messages have put them off! Perhaps some are waiting to see if the site settles down again.
Meanwhile, to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I can offer anything different on how to improve this shot .
Best regards, Chris

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 8/22/2005
Well, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as my dear grandma used to say. Thanks anyway, Chris. Comments are a bit thin on the ground but this IS the holiday season and Usefilm IS a bit weird, as you say. The photos were there with the comments until the database server went down. I think that the image backup does not extend to the images associated with comments (I've asked Al but am not counting on a reply). I lost all my valuable suggestions of that kind in the last upgrade and it seems to have happened again. Very annoying.

Hi Roger
I don't know, but I like the shot the way it is
it feels like I was with you there
and the shabby background make the flowers on the foreground really stand out

the only thing I might suggest is for little less complicated composition is to crop the upper part and burn a bit on the right top. but then again it will loose the atmosphere of the place.

Marcia .   {K:16108} 8/23/2005
Hi Roger,
I will follow the sugestions given here too, I?m here more to learn with you than to teach anything... :-)
Just want to add that I liked very much your comment/explanation in the forum. I completely agree with you.

Regards,
Márcia.

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 8/23/2005
Hi, Marcia. I'm glad you liked my forum comments. Unfortunately Al doesn't: he's deleted two complete threads to which I had given carefully considered and completely honest (and as far as I knew, truthful) comments. Of course I know this is not a democracy, and I still think the good far outweighs the bad here.

Marcia .   {K:16108} 8/23/2005
That?s the way... I have seen, sadly, many of my friends going away from here... for different reasons. But the worst it that some of them were just blocked. :-/
Better we stop, or we?ll be blocked too. ;-)
Hehehehe....
Take care.

Excellent capture of those so nice flowers Roger,
I gree with cessys cropping a bit the upper part
wich brings more attention to this beautiful floral
Many thanks for commenting on "Nice little corner"
The light is very bright here in summer, this shot was taken aprox at 7.30 AM,to take a panoramic shot wouldn,t be interesting as the place was surrounded with bushes,I will try next time to catch also the children
Best regards

Marcia .   {K:16108} 8/24/2005
I saw that he did... but I still remember what you said because it is true.
things like this only make me leave the site... as many of my friends... :-(

Paul's Photos   {K:35218} 8/25/2005
nice shot..like the dof...not sure if cropping some off the top of the photo would bring more focus to the flowers or not... good work

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 8/25/2005
Thank you, Cessy. I like your crop. I didn't WANT to crop out that Japanese roof because I thought it gave a kind of visual context, but I can see how it simplifies the image and concentrates on the more interesting area... Much appreciated!
