About I've spent two weeks dropping fruit into water. I'm finally getting some results I'm prepared to upload. It's all very frustrating. When the storks flew over a few days ago, I ran off a few shots, played a little in PSP9 and soon had an image I was happy with (see "We trust our fate to the winds"). But these splash shots have proved to be much more elusive!

Pat Ziegler   {K:21597} 8/22/2005
Two weeks! Lol I'll leave it alone :-)

The results are dam good. this one has a metalic look to it.. I supose when dropping fruit into water, timing is everything...

Are you firing the camera by hand? The tech in me is thinking up a triggering circuit :-) The displation of the water could be use to complete a circuit... a little variable delay adjustment... Hmmm....

Ornella Erminio   {K:3329} 8/22/2005
un capolavoro, adoro questo tipo di foto, complimenti, ciao Ornella

Sally Morgan   {K:9219} 8/23/2005
Definately worth the effort - I particularly like the 'bubbly' bits on top of the lemon
What did you drop it into - a fish tank?
Are you going to do a mini-series with different fruits and vegetables?

Roger Williams   {K:83282} 8/23/2005
That's the difference between using photography to capture what happens, and making things happen so that you can photograph them! Lot more creativity required in the latter, I'd say. This is encouraging! Look forward to more in this series.

AJ Miller   {K:46155} 8/23/2005
Hi Pat! Many thanks for your comment. Yes, the camera was fired by hand. Your suggestion of making this automatic is interesting since, as you suggest, timing is everything. But, catching the image at different times also changes the effect, as does dropping the fruit from a different height. So although firing by hand does lead to a certain randomness, it does also mean that I get shots of the fruit at different stages in its drop (and with practice, not too many before it hits the water?) AJ

AJ Miller   {K:46155} 8/23/2005
Hi Sameh! Many thanks for your comment. I?ve taken at least 250 shots in this project, and I?m not finished yet! But I hope to upload more than just this one? AJ

AJ Miller   {K:46155} 8/23/2005
Hi Sally! Many thanks for your comment. For this particular shot I used a spherical vase that looks a bit like an old fashioned fish tank. The full image is attached so you can see more of the setup. But in fact I?ve been experimenting with different shaped vases and they all produce very different results. One vase in particular produces a wonderful water spout when the lemon drops in, but for some reason I added green food colouring to the water when I took those particular shots and the results look naff. I hope to upload some more, but they?re likely to be mostly lemons. The shape of lemons seems to produce the best results (and even then some lemons are better than others - oh dear, here we go again?). Nevertheless, I?ve previously uploaded an image with radishes, and oranges produce a pretty impressive splash. AJ

Pat Ziegler   {K:21597} 8/23/2005
Sholdn't be too hard to build. A timing control could be added so you could adjust the delay.. I might have to try it..

Sally Morgan   {K:9219} 8/23/2005
The original is a stunning image in it's own right - I like the splash at the top!

Mirza Durakovic   {K:789} 8/24/2005
awsome photo AJ. Thanks for posting original photo, i was wondering in what did you dropped lemon. as sally said, this original photo has its "thing" also. 8/7

Richard Thornton   {K:26442} 8/24/2005
A very graphic series, full of interesting shapes and colors. The lemon calls up all kinds of secondary ideas, too.

andree lerat   {K:16846} 8/24/2005
Love it. The camera captures what the eye cannot... :) Andree

You spend two weeks in Tarifa dropping lemons into water??? That is what I call dedication to the cause...
:-)
Now.. seriously... great picture!... glad you managed to get the result you wanted in the end.

Den Thompson   {K:30432} 9/10/2005
John, your dedication and perseverance in obtaining this series of most difficult to catch shots is admirable. You've got some incredible results. I raise my hat to you. It is a pity that your hard work has not been recognised with an award as any one of these shots are more than worthy. You have my utmost respect.
Den

This is a very well executed shot, John. I like all of your pictures of fruit dropping onto water, but this is my favorite. The rest of your portfolio is very impressive too.

Thank you for your comments on my balloon pictures.
