About Billy Smart - living on the waste dump for almost 18 years. He knows nothing else and his dignity and hope has faded in years of a senseless wastfull existence. Billy told me of several people he saw dying on the waste dump many young, others old - all with the same lack of hope. To him it seemed they lost their appetite for life and simply stopped living.

Billy is one of almost 80 people living on waste at a local municipal dump site. Currently about seventeen families live here, they are outcasts from their respective suburbs due to some misbeahviour in the past. These people are the poorest of the poor and will literally eat anything. This is my first visit to the site and I am determined to work towards a sustainable solution to help them get back their dignity and start living and enjoying life as normal people - especially the many children trapped in these atrocious circumstances.

Anybody on Usefilm who are serious about this and want to become involved in real solutions are welcome to contact me at joggievs@telkomsa.net

Hard to use positive adjectives in context of this image, but it is a great capture of a sad reality. I'm short on time for a few days but will email you for more info.
Take care, Randy

I think that this portrait is a great beginning toward helping out. Your work is soulful and such a project done by you would surely get some attention if you could exhibit the images that you take of this location and its' people.

Good Luck Joggie. It is difficult to get involved as you are about to do.

A sensitive shot of this unfortunate man, Joggie.
I hope this series of shots helps you raise some practical support for what you're planning to do to help.
Best regards, Chris

Beautiful work Joggie, great tones...and a very sad story, good for you to bring this out to the public...there is so much tragedy in the world right now, it's horrible, Iraq, the homeless, the hurricane, so much to think about and pray about...moving and compelling image...:):)
