About An awesome building? but very difficult to photograph unless you've got a fish-eye lens!!

Some history?

York Minster was built between the 12th and the 15th Century and is the largest Gothic church in England. It is 524 feet (160m) long and 249 feet (76m) wide. The height from floor to vault is over 90 feet (27m).The twin west towers are about 184 feet (56m) high, and the lantern tower 234 feet (71m). A visit to the Central Tower offers excellent views over the city. The Foundations Museum under the Minster shows how the present building was constructed on the site of a Norman Cathedral, which was itself built on a Roman Fort.

This shot was taken around 7a.m. ~ hence the empty streets. There are only a few people crazy enough to get up that early!!!

Best regards to all,

Chris

Fabio Ficola   {K:10466} 8/30/2005
Amazing picture dear Chris.
I remember when I went to York my effort to get some nice picture of that church. I had only a 50mm at that time but when I was back from England my bag carried an extra 28mm lens :-)

Thank you for the brief history of the cathedral.
If I remember there was a a big fire about 10 or more years ago that destroyed part of the roof I hope is ok now.

Best regards. Fabio

You have captured beautiful texture in this wonderful old building, Chris. It's hard to imagine it lasting this long. They don't build em like that anymore! Glad you got out at such an uncivilized hour and took this picture to share with us. Best wishes, Larry

An excellent architectural shot Chris. You did very well to avoid the obvious distortion of the buildings so often accompanied by these lenses. Great colours and details. Kind regards.
Joggie

Chris, Thanks for the about. The smaller building in the background provides a counterpoint to the massive ornate front of the church. Lovely sky colors. It's strange how architecture and art (oil paintings) from centuries ago look much more sophisticated than what we see today.

Margaret Sturgess   {K:49403} 8/30/2005
Really good shot of the impressive York Minster Chris

People seem to have interpreted your remark about fisheyes as implying that you used one. Not so, I believe. And architectural shots are quite the most difficult to take successfully with one... I see you know the trick of minimizing the effect of leaning verticals by making sure the vertical in the center of the picture is true. I still think I would have corrected them... one use of PS that I exploit without a second thought"!

Roger Williams   {K:83282} 8/30/2005
Here's how it would look with the verticals more or less aligned. I have no problems with the "vertical panorama" look but some find it a bit drastic... What do you think?

ade mcfade   {K:12388} 8/30/2005
sure is an impressive place, though they've started to charge a fiver to go in! Used to be free with those optional boxes on the way in.

Very tricky to get an original shots of it, not many from this angle really - were you up by the black railings for this one? need a 14mm lens to get it all in from there :-)

nice deatil and I alwayws wondered what it looked like without people all around it!

Burak Tanriover   {K:16604} 8/30/2005
Hello Chris,
thank you for the information,
I like the composition and the sky a lot.
best wishes

Dave Stacey   {K:117777} 8/30/2005
Glad you got up early enough to show us this great building without crowds around it, Chris! It's beautiful architecture, and you've certainly done it justice with the details and composition!
Dave.

ricardo longhi-frantz   {K:9648} 8/30/2005
wonderful building! great shot!

cessy karina   {K:14205} 8/30/2005
magnificent building, captured in very nice timing
by the early photographer who wants a fish eye lens :))
I bought a wide lens 12-24mm and from time to time borrow a fish eye lens, and do agree with you, they could be very useful

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 8/31/2005
Thanks, Larry!! It was great being able to go round this ancient city and not have to dodge the crowds! Perfect for picture taking!!
Best regards, Chris

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 8/31/2005
Well spotted, Roger! You're right, of course ~ I have no fisheye lens? Yet!!

And many thanks for the straightened version. It looks very good. I did correct the perspective a fair bit, but felt I wanted to leave a little 'lean' to emphasise the sheer size of this magnificent structure.

Best regards, Chris

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 8/31/2005
Many thanks, Dave. It was a joy to walk around this ancient city unimpeded by the usual crowds of people!!
Best regards, Chris

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 8/31/2005
Great detail Chris, sometimes you don't need the whole building to tell the story. Nice sky. Don.

Hi Chris,

This is beautiful. Very well composed and balanced. Love the colours and I particularly like the sunlight falling on the chimneys in the background.

Ciprian
