Nice photo!
The previous shot with guitar looks a little snappier, contrastwise, than this one. Cover her with your hand, and the remaining image looks crisper, yes? But if you raise contrast overall it probably won't look right, and it's already dark enough. Don't know if you are interested but here's what I would do in a case like this- burn and dodge in a little more image contrast. For example, try lightening her face, arms, and hair just a smidge. Darken down her knees two smidges. Go into small detail-less shadow areas and with a small brush burn the center of them down to black. Like after dodging her upper body, go back and burn to black the center of the shadow under her chin. Sound like too much manipulating? I guess purists would say so, but it only takes a minute to experiment on a copy, or some other photo, see what you think.

I think your tones are way too flat here, Ang. Try playing with a curves adjustment layer, to get more contrast in your midtones...it will add roundness to their faces, much like your other photo of Grant...that one is perfect.

Sammy! Your comment is exactly the kind of comment I LOVE! Thanks so much! Now, it doesn't sound like too much manipulation to me but I don't know how to use burn or dodge. I haven'et learned them. It is going to be another hectic day here,
so maybe something about burning and
dodging this image tonight.
Meanwhile, I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro,
so the tools will probably have different
names in Adobe PS. If you don't already
do burning and dodging, you might look
for the tool. In Paint Shop the tool
is called [Retouch]. There are a bunch
of different [Retouch] options including
dodge, burn, lightness up, lightness down,
lighten RGB, and darken RGB. I use
lighten RGB and darken RGB, because I
scan my B&W prints in color, adjust brightness,
contrast, burn, dodge etc., and either
convert to gray scale or colorize for the
final edit. I have been editing digital
images for some years, just simple stuff,
but scanning to digitize prints is very
new to me, (I started because of UF,)
so if there is a better way to do things,
please let me know.

I don't know a thing about
layers and adjusting curves.
I guess I'll have to start
learning about them. Jan
can you explain basically
what explain what a curve
adjustment layer is. Gamma
adjustment? Why is a layer
needed?
I don't think I ever read any
of the Paint Shop docs, the tools
I use are intuitive, I learned
what they do by playing around
with them, but layers are not
intuitive, at least not to me.
Would someone explain briefly
what a layer is, why you need
them etc?

I know I have a burn and a dodge tool in photo shop. Hopefully they do similiar things to the program you are using.

Sammy, I understand layers, Jan taught me about those, but I do not get the adjustment curves yet either. I'm the same as you. I don't read as much as i should about these programs but like to learn by trial and error and playing around. Anyways, like I said, I understand and use layears but I don't think I could explain them very well.

Do you split an image into
parts, do things to different
layers, and then put them back
together again? Actually years
ago, I did start reading some
Corel Draw doc about layers, but
didn't get very far, too
confusing for me....

Well, I knwo I start out with most of my pictures by making a new layer that I can then use a filter of soft light on. This sharpens them up if they need it. Then everything I do to my pictures goes on a seperate layer as well, like brightness and contrast, levels, etc. At the end, i'm somtimes asked if i want to flatten all layers and I was told not to do that. That's pretty much my extent of knowledge on layers. : )
