Hi Pan! Yes, a little PS involved. Nothing particularly smart, just pushed contrast on a b/w layer, blended then reduced opacity. Was more or less a happy accident while I was playing!!

Now this one can no longer be considered an accident :)
That multiple layer blending process worked very well on this one! This is exactly the kind of image that is described in that book in my about on the Old Mill Lane.

A little more difficult than I had expected to pull out detail in the branches because of the thick fog + blur, but yeah, it started to come good the more I stuck at it. Am a huge fan of the desat too for moody scenes. That's what it's all about really, creating a mood that, as you say, stirs an emotion.
