I love you different way of photographing these fireworks!

Seems like your firework shots are a little out of focus, but it plays a very interesting role.

Thanks, Jay - you have very good fireworks shots ... Happy Birthday to Alberta as well, of course :-] This is a fairly substantial enlargement, which may add to its blurriness, and I was using my lighter tripod. Some of the other shots showed definite camera shake and that might be part of what is happening here. Finally - I had the aperture opened all the way up at f4 and I wonder if maybe this isn't a bit overexposed (I know I said 5 seconds, but it was closer to 10).
Anyway... live and learn. I have a couple more I'm going to upload - we'll see how they look when I get them scanned.

Jon,
I see why the lines of the fireworks are soo bright. You should have your f-stop around 16...
When you have the lens wide open you will see nothing but white streaks. Try using smaller aperture to reduce the harsh light entering the lens. Your exposure timing is perfect. Looking at the time exposure it looks close to 8 seconds long.
This will help bring the wonderful details of the fireworks. Also, try to steady that light tripod! You should sit on the ground and use the shortest length you can on the tripod while sitting, that should help steady it. Also... Hands off the camera once you release the shutter! Very important!
I hope these tips will help you if you do catch the next event, like the new year's eve!

Oh! One more thing... I don't think it was the shakiness that has brought the "blurriness". If it was the the unsteady tripod you would not see nice smooth straight lines. Infact, I beleive that your focus was off.
Kinda makes sence with the difference of shakeness and underfocusing. Just keep on trying! Good thing fireworks last a good 10 mins. Plenty of time to get your focus up to par.

Hey Jon, These turned out great. Next time there are some fireworks, I'll have to steal your secret. Mine turned out like junk.
Also, good job on winning the Phase 2 contest. That was a great shot.

Thanks, Vance - I appreciate your kind comments. There are some things I would have done differently with the fireworks but, well - live and learn. I am no un-pleased, but the real eye-popping result eluded me.
Yeah - coulda knocked me over with a feather on that Phase II thing. Quite a pleasant surprise.
