About This started out as a puzzle--you had to guess what this building was for. It's name is GAIA. It's the biggest building near our station. The vertical signs say "Event now running," and the four characters in the rectangular sign read "Feel safe every day." The answer, as several people commented, is a pachinko (slot machine) center! I've commented before on the undeveloped sense of incongruity among the Japanese. A slot machine parlour called GAIA? Really!!

Here's another shot. There's a very strong clue in it, almost a giveaway...

Clue to Puzzle

I'd guess either a cinema or a video game parlour.

Audrey Reid   {K:5872} 9/25/2005
Hm..Prize? :)

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 9/25/2005
The prize, Audry, will be a free round of whatever drink you choose with which to toast your health (and intelligence). The prize has to be received in Tokyo, though.

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 9/25/2005
Close, Matej, but no cigar.

Audrey Reid   {K:5872} 9/25/2005
Good idea & good fun Roger. The answer is....I won't spoil it for others. But will sure claim the drink soon :)

What a great on-line Puzzle game.

*** Pachinko Game Centre ***

The hanging "Flags" already telling the answer.

Pachinko ...... a mixture of pinball and slot machine.

Lovely colourful Ads, great capture, well done!

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 9/25/2005
Congratulations, Mchk (or should I call you 2000?).
Yes, it's a Pachinko parlor--a huge one. Another example of the incongrous in Japan! I mean, can you imagine anywhere else in the world where they'd call a place like that Gaia?

Tim  Schumm   {K:28854} 9/26/2005
Pachinko is a game I used to play while playing hooky from school....it does have a particular allure

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 9/26/2005
No idea, Roger!
It looks like a cinema to me!
Best regards, Chris
P.S. Though on second thoughts, (he says, after reading the comments!), it could be a Pachinko Parlour!!! ;o)

Roger Williams   {K:84106} 9/26/2005
Yes indeed, Chris. You read right. I'll change the "about" to reflect this... My donor's privileges run out today, but I will be renewing them just as soon as the new site goes on line... It does look like a cinema, though, I agree. The one thing it DOESN'T look like is the general run of Pachinko Parlour.

It is intriguing to see the quite different style of advertising from here. Certainly very colourful. I am learning a lot about your home through your shots.
