"Fire and Ice" may have been an alternative name for this one with these lovely warm and cool tones. The colours in this are stunning. Beautifully composed with lots of interest without being too busy. Beautiful photo. Looks like a painting.

The foreground has some great lines in it, very powerful pull that leads the eye up into the mountains. I almost feel that the contrast is a bit weak here and I'm thinking it's because there doesn't seem to be any extreme darks in here and it feels like there should be some, especially with high contrast velvia. The water has an interesting, peaceful hue, while the sky is on fire. Which filter was used for this effect? They are two such extremes.. cool blues and hot oranges, but they work fairly well together to create a pleasing scene. I love the fact that I can see rocks and ground underneath the water in the foreground... another element to add interest.

I love how you slowed the shutter so much it almost makes the water look like a haze. The colors are abosolutely amazing as well. It almost doesnt even look real they're so extreme. Very good job!

Thanks for all of your honest comments. Yes Ann, when a photographer learns to use a tripod as well as the long exposure, images can indeed look like a painting. I often prefer this type of effect on both seascapes like this as well as waterfalls. Even nightscapes with people or car lights can work quite well with longer exposures.
Yes Kim, I agree that this could use a touch more contrast. I will look closely at the big file. I cannot say exactly which filter was used here though. Either the Cokin sunset filter or the Cokin tobacco. I am just not sure since I like to shoot as many ways as possible. This way when I do get to the lightbox, there is usually a winner somewhere in there. I can also use a variety of images for different purposes as needed. I only fired six frames from this viewpoint however. Something I wish I'd worked even more thoroughly. However, I have been back though and perhaps found even better possibilities than what's posted here. This particular image is going into our print line. The touch of blue on the right side is a deeper spot where there is most likely sand on the bottom, therefore the blue tint. What you see here is what the original slide looks like as well. Hope this helps. Mahalos for taking the time.
Nice to hear from you Bart. Perhaps Wyland should consider selling photography too. I'll have to give them a call...
Aloha

Hello Ken. Excelllent WB.Your metering was right on.The saturation of the Velvia film is noticeable in this photograph. The closes thing in the digital world is to use a velvia curve for highlights ,and some old film filters to emulate the saturation. Neither being as good. Very good work.

Tom

nice image Vincent but i think you over did the colour in the sky, it competes with, and detracts from, the foreground

Aloha Vince...just joined this site a coupe of weeks ago. This is one of your best! The sunlight effect in the sky conotes "Lightning" to me, which is perfect because of the mood generated by the clouds and water. The resultant overall scene is stormy and atmospheric; not unlike a torrid romance. Regards.

I just discovered your portfolio and I must say your photos take my breath away! I was on the Big Island last year and miss it so much. You are very lucky to live in paradise! It is difficult to improve on any photograph taken in Hawaii but you have certainly mastered the art. Your photos have that magical touch. Keep up the good work and keep sharing the beauty that you are surrounded by. :-)
