that's a well done shoot , did you try to crope a little the right or mask little more the wood

Nanette, can you explain the rim lighting to me in more detail. I agree that I would like to seperate her hair more from the background but I also want to keep the shot dark with heavy shadowing. The lighting I used was merely the pool table light.

Stephane, thank you. I tried a couple different crops and found this one worked best to show enough of the pool table (especially the wood rail) but not too much.

Rim light is any type of lighting that form a rim around the subject. In this case it would be placed as a backlight or sidelight. As I read this photo you have just set her on the table and took a shot - handheld probably due to the sharpness. I would suggest going to Lowe's or Walmart and getting yourself a couple 'hot' lights, something in the 500watt range. Or for less money just put some 200 watt bulbes in a regular clamp on work light - but watchout for the heat. Once you have the lights, start playing.

Get this book if you want to really understand what you are doing. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0240802756/solecist77/ This book has impacted my photography more than any other single element, even my college degree in it. This book specifically deals with revealing the subject in the most effective way possible.

I like what you tried to do here. Very much so actually. I somehow regret the softness, and wish it would be really sharp on the model. As for the light, using the pool table light was probably the only way at your disposal, and overall I'd say it works fine. Nevertheless, either a rim light on the hair, either possibly a bit more light on her face coming from the right were 2 interesting additions. If you have a flash gun at disposal, you can use it in open flash, meaning disconnected from your camera. In this case, you could have set the flash to its minimal power or such and bounced it off a yellow card that would refflect on her face without breaking the mood you were going for. Finally, I agree with Stephane about the crop suggested. I would suggest you retry that shot, because I see this as potentially great. It is already good as it is, but the little improvements would make quite a difference in my opinion. (By the way, the oufit is fantastic for this image.) Regards.
