About Photo of the Grand Canyon during an inversion. An inversion occurs when clouds hover below the rim and fill the chasm.

PS Work: converted to b&w, adjusted tones, minor cropping.

"The glories and the beauties of form, color and sound unite in the Grand Canyon?forms unrivaled even by the mountains, colors that vie with the sunsets, and sounds that span the diapason from tempest to tinkling raindrop, from cataract to bubbling fountain." --Major John Wesley Powell

"The Grand Canyon is not as easy to photograph (at least well) as people think ... the vastness, differences in lighting, and picking the right perspective is always a challenge." - Paul's Photos

How true you stated that on mine which I did indeed greatly appreciate, but you have proven it's worth in truthfulness 'Ten - Fold' with this your own image with great vertical impact and clarity destined to be rendered in B&W!

Thanks once again Paul for the mutual interest - Best of Regards!

Amna Al Shamsi   {K:20822} 10/20/2005
woow! this is a real beauty, a photo that deserve an award

Roger Williams   {K:82679} 10/21/2005
Splended photo, Paul. My sunny sixteen rule obviously doesn't work in the Grand Canyon! Your exposure and conversion to B&W are absolutely spot on. Almost, from the thumbnail, like one of those time-exposure cliches of waves dashing against the rocky shore and getting all fuzzy and smeared, but a 100 or 1000 times more impact for being REAL CLOUDS. Are temperature inversions like this fairly common, or very unusual? They are fairly common where I come from in the UK (Bristol in the SW), usually in Autumn, where we knew them as fogs. Of course that's experiencing them from underneath, not from above. I think I prefer above.

Hanggan Situmorang   {K:37782} 10/21/2005
Fantastic view, Paul. Great BW tones and beautifully composed. Congrats!

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47538} 10/21/2005
The position and the capture view gave this shot a powerful look, where you managed to record a wonderful phenomena of an inversion atmosphere, the elements combine a wonderful contrast and your of B&W version of excellent choice, a very selective work. Saeed

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 10/22/2005
thanks Roger, Yes, I have encountered the fog in England many times.. As to the inversion, not sure how often it happens but the park rangers seemed to indicate that it is a bit rare on the large scale.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30021} 10/22/2005
Paul, you did yourself proud with this one. It is a gem. Breathtaking. Antonia

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91033} 10/22/2005
silly me! went straight to donor forum to nominate this and then forgot to comment!
Breathtaking is an understatement,Paul...it is right up there with all of the classic B/W landscape photogs like Ansel Adams...the tonal range/black n' white pts. are exquisite!...the perspective is brilliant and the inversion cloudlayer is a very appealing and interesting element.....to my faves and 7+
Congrats! best regards,gayle

WOW...this is AWESOME!! Congratulations for the BIP and a very well deserved award indeed. I have actually flown around the rim of the canyon when this has occurred and it's a fascinating sight to behold and a little interesting in a small plane. Words fail me to comment on the image itself as I'm too caught up in the content of the subject. Thank you for sharing this. I just love cloudy images.

Thank you also for taking to the time to view my images and for your comments. Cheers - Ann :)

taran     {K:1345} 3/11/2006
Far freakin out man, what timing and great use of BW. The BW really sets it off, because of the nebulousness of the clouds, I think of what is hidden (left to the imagination), in this view from a castle in the sky, of sorts. Thanks for sharing, and your kind comment on my pan. YOur folio kicks ass. cheers, t
