Location City -  Berlin
State -  BERLIN
Country - Germany   Germany
About Subject background: Some skyscrapers at the Potsdamer Platz, competing with the oldest traffic light in Berlin (around 1920). For me, this looks like War of the Worlds from HG Wells... don't ask me why =)

PS concept: Only mild work on levels.

10mm wonder! Fantastic work with a futuristic feel. Yes, I do agree, it does have the alien L@@K !

Magnus Beierlein   {K:1641} 11/20/2005
FANTASTIC wide angle shot from the home of the Bratwurst and Lebkuchen....i actually saw the new version of the movie yesterday and the building on the right really reminds me of the movie....I?ve senn some old covers from the book by H.G.Wells as well as the movie poster from the movie from -53........you're defintely on the right track here

Magnus

an amazing night perspective of potsdamer platz! probably there's some loss in quality with jpeg compression, but well done anyway

ciao

Paolo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 11/20/2005
Hi Paolo,

it's not the JPEG compression but a mild selective blur in the sky to get rid of the ISO artifacts.

thx! Thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 11/20/2005
Hi Magnus,

shame on me! This is the city of Weisse mit Schuss, not Bratwurst country!

glad you shared my impression of the alien stuff. I just saw the original war of the worlds.

Thilo

I'm sorry Thilo.....i thought it was Nürnberg...that?s why I started ranting about bratwurst....on the other hand I never saw such buildings in Nürnberg

Buildings as art, as sculpture is how I've always seen it. Anybody who designs them should take that into consideration. Even streetlights. You did a great job putting them together like this. They don't seem to battle, but they're like united.

War of the sky..... great done Thilo!

Another first-rate extreme wide angle shot. Definitely other-worldly. I especially like the soft glow from the highlights. Really nice stuff!

Hi Thilo,
I agree with you to, its the right object that does it for me. A turret (wrong spelling) on high legs... I guess in reality it is a traffic post, ifso i guess (again) that you were quite low to the ground with you camera.
Excellent shot, although there a lot of skyscrapers photo's i find this one one of the better & original.
Small minor point to me is de high iso setting the sky and parts of the post.

Best wishes
Karel

A very suitable title Thilo.
You are right the traffic light does look similar to what you would imagine those martian machines to look like.
I saw the Cruise/Speilburg version a few months ago at the cinema. I was a little dissapointed, but it is still worth a look for sci/fi fans. It came out in DVD here this week.

Ab fab shot!!! Love the different shapes and colors in this image!!!! Great clarity and an excellent composition/angle.... well captured!!!

Bradley Prue   {K:30294} 11/21/2005
Thilo, I think your use of space is remarkable, here. The 10mm choice was the right one, here... and I agree, it does have that "looking up at the ominous and dizzying heights" War of the Worlds feel! I like the heavy saturation levels, and the grit that gives this that "Sci-Fi" feeling as well... Nicely done, my friend!

great perspective .. but what I really like about this image is the different types of buildings in the image with the contrasting architecture... each building has its own unique character... great angle, nicely seen and captured.. good work

Linda Bique   {K:73826} 11/21/2005
Very nice angle, perspective and distortion. I like the varying shapes of the buildings and the clarity is very good...well seen Thilo, the building on the right has an alien character or a star wars type character..a very tall robot with eyes all around his head, and very long legs, hehehehe..great work my friend!

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21869} 11/21/2005
Hi Thilo,super...der Titel triffts genau!

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 11/21/2005
I really like the towering buildings leaning in over me here. I am surprised at the amount of noise at equiv ISO 500. The night sky kind of needs a silky feel to it here. All IMHO, of course.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 11/21/2005
Hi Stefan,

to be honest, I was kind of surprised, too, in a negative way. There are some pictures from Berlin that are totally crap due to horrible ISO mess.

Thilo

Edward Molnar   {K:2903} 11/21/2005
Very well seen and done! Congrtas!
