About From the green jungle to the mountains I just felt like blues for blues sake.

This is Convict Lake at Mammoth in California. I used a portrait orientation because the mountain was too high to get the whole reflection in its entirety into the image from where I was standing. There was a fence between me and the water so I couldn't move any further back cause I didn't want the fence in the shot and I wasn't about go swimming for this photo. That water was freezing up at that altitude (close to 7,000feet).

Anyway...the mountain had some interesting colour in it and I liked it so I snapped it.

No stunts! No PS! No fun huh! :)

Thank you to all who take the time to view and comment on my images. Enjoy.

Cheers - Ann :)

Great landscape capture, love the reflection in the still blue water. Nice work!

George Tam   {K:416} 11/27/2005
Ann, I like the way the rocks seem to be suspended on the surface of the water. It is always interesting to read the background information of the photograph, especially when the photographer describes problems that he/she encountered and the creative process that went into making the shot. I think it adds so much more to the image alone. Thanks for sharing.

Robert Kocs   {K:89061} 11/27/2005
Wow & wooow! Incredible still, fantastic view. What a lovely, peaceful atmosphere. It seems the time is stopped. Very nice natural colours and tones. Love the beautiful reflection with little blue rocks. Well captured moment! A very artistic scene with never seen still landscape. Very well done dear Ann! Thanks for share Us! :) 7+++ ...saved my favs! :)

All my best wishes!
Robert

Beautiful Ann; that is one part of California that I have only been by & not visited. I will have to get there. Great Shot!

Jim Goldstein   {K:21230} 11/27/2005
Beautiful scene, but I don't think the lighting was your friend at this hour. The partial shadows in the foreground rocks are distracting to me and much of the exposed mountainside seems over exposed. Tough exposure, but perhaps the time of day wasn't quite right for softer lighting. This is a great location I hope you get the chance to visit again and get a second shot. Seeing locations such as this make me want to travel more here in state!

Doc Roberts   {K:549} 11/27/2005
Fantastic shot Ann! This is why you are one of my faves. I love the clarity of the reflection and the unusual color bars in the mountain. Very well done.

Gary Dyck   {K:11858} 11/27/2005
ooooo, nice reflection Ann!! Well done, but I still don't understand why you didn't go swimming?? hahaha Cheers, Gary

Jara Parijayee    {K:4964} 11/27/2005
Terrific terrain. I do feel the difficulty of exposure balancing as well as coverage trouble. Still looking fine!

Petal Wijnen   {K:47829} 11/27/2005
Nice one!! Super reflection(s), beautiful colors and great composition (with those rocks in the foreground)... well done!!! Too bad that the real mountain (not the reflection of it... that's perfect) is a bit overexposed (to me that is), but in bright sunshine it's often a compromise: get the mountain right and the reflection is too dark and the otherway around.... so you did a good job... ;-D!!!

Margaret Sturgess   {K:49403} 11/27/2005
Wonderful reflections Ann, I'm with you no climbing fences or in freezing water,
Margaret

Mireille Heirendt   {K:7258} 11/27/2005

Hermosos paisaje y reflejos.
Felicitaciones!

Linda Bique   {K:73877} 11/27/2005
Wow Ann this is a very very lovely view of this gorgeous place, I agree with your vertical presentation for the reasons you mentioned, sometimes things just don't work the way we'd like them too..Like my orangutan I'd much rather had her facing the light but....anyway gorgeous capture, the blues are beautiful and well balanced, love the reflections too, it's almost a double reflection because of the rocks breaking it up. The top of the mountain being reflected is so well detailed, love it, very well seen and captured!

Menno Naber   {K:3567} 11/27/2005
Stunning image, well done!
You live in a very nice area
Greetings Menno

Peter McDonald   {K:4371} 11/28/2005
hi therehanks for your comment on my photo.

you have some extremly good scenic pictures on your site.

if i could suggest only a very thing you might like to try.

most of your photos are all dead center in the frame.

if it is a nice sky, use the 2/3s rule. 2/3 of the photo is the nice sky and the other 1/3 the ground.

or if its a great land shoot 2/3s land and 1/3 sky.

like i said it might make your great photos even better.

cheers peter

Larry Hammond   {K:16631} 11/28/2005
Very beautiful Ann, such a vast depth, goes on forever, doesn't it? Reflection is superb!!

Larry

Kelly Duntley   {K:13055} 11/28/2005
I love the colors of the reflection and the wonderful details of the mountian. Lovely pattern. I'm actually standing on my head trying to get a better view of it, not too easy at my age. I wonder what this would look like flipped over. Great capture of patterns.
Kelly

Ann Nida   {K:45230} 11/28/2005
Oh Kelly I get such a kick out of your humorous comments. I can just envision you standing on your head trying to look at this upside down. Hey maybe if I turn it upside down it would solve all my overexposure problems in the topside mountain. haha.

Thanks for the chuckles.

Cheers - Ann :)

Rina     {K:26519} 11/28/2005
Took me a couple of seconds to realise they were boulders in the water, not three little tunnels :)) The reflection is superb Ann.
U n b e l i e v a b l e blue hues in the sky.

Sounds like you had to work hard to get the comp you were satisfied with. And it paid off too. Well snapped!

Cheers
Rina

Thanks for your warm comment Ann. I'll most likely pop in and out to check up on what everyone's doing. So hard to stay away from this place :) Take care!

Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 11/28/2005

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91033} 11/28/2005
hi, first off it has a wow! factor impact on the viewer,or at least "this viewer"....the only thing that bothers me is that i don't like cut in the middle images...i love the FG and the blue sky,but the sky is in reflection,so you could afford to lose most of it above the mt.....just my pref and not because of 3rds rule...just not big on symmetry ...i be an asymmetrical kinda gal..LOL..

Clarity and subject matter are amazing...the water looks like a mirror...love the reflections!

Dove dark chocolate is also very good for sickies...;> regards, gayle

Ralf Denguth   {K:3363} 11/28/2005
Wonderful reflection Ann! Very well seen! Many greetings...Ralf

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 11/29/2005
Wonderful reflection and colors, Ann! Those boulders seem to be floating, amazing foreground to take into this spectacular view! Gosh, I'd be tempted to put my vintage lady in there! Or maybe the Lochness monster coming out of the water! Cheers, Ina

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 11/29/2005

Another wonderful landscape, Ann. The reflections are fantastic; the blue adds real colour contrast.

Janet B   {K:16139} 12/1/2005
What a glorious and calm day! Love the still of the reflection! Well captured, Ann, and what a wonderful time you must have sightseeing! Nice blues!

Just so you are aware...you could have stood on the rocks and not got wet...they only appear to be about 2 inches from the edge of the photo and I am sure you could have stepped over that ;-) hee hee!

Shaun Rullens   {K:2594} 12/1/2005
looks like you needed a wider angle lens!
great shot. I would of liked the landscape view.

Shanw

this is really really beautiful!
the reflection,the colors,the stone,......7++++

i wish you to a merry christmas and a verry good shooting new year.

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 12/20/2005
Breathtaking view ! Would be indded interesting to see also in fog or cloudy sky, but the strong blue has its own quality. The "dead center" horizon is no issue for me, because of the beautiful reflections. Only wish is a resharpen after resize for upload, since you always lose some sharpness in the jpeg/ downsize process

Bob Walker   {K:1066} 12/24/2005
This is beautiful, Ann!
Excellent still water reflection and beautiful colors.
I haven't made it up to Convict Lake as of yet, but hopefully next year.

Best regards,
Bob

Gregory McLemore   {K:25085} 12/24/2005
As titled, A still blue scenic beauty, very well done my friend.

Ann, sorry for multiple comments, I got error messages every time sent so assumed it did not get through. n.j

Andrzej Pradzynski   {K:21195} 12/28/2005
I guess what I was trying to say before is gone now, OK it was something like that. Yes you are righy Ann, picturing mountains may be a challange and one need to be prepared to compromise perfectness of the picture or its own comfort. You did good here without being soaked in cold waters. I like colors of the rocks - I've seen similar on "artists palete" drive in DV, CA - The great reflection in cool waters of the calm lake and foreground rocks give nice stable layout of the frame. Beautiful one, n.j

Ferdinand    {K:3516} 1/1/2006
Great contrasts and colours - I love the way the reflected water is more saturated than the 'real' stuff...

Michael Trembath   {K:3235} 1/3/2006
It would have been undescribeable to witness this shot in real life, I love how you liked the 'interesting colour' which was your motivation to photograph it. Although the reflective effect could be recreated in PS, the addition of the rocks and boulders (along with their reflections) keeps the shot from looking 'artificial'. Thanks for sharing, all the best for the new year!

Michael

Tim  Schumm   {K:26927} 1/7/2006
another superb photo, Although I feel that if the third rock from the left in the fore ground was completely silhouetted the impact would have been somewhat stronger

Fabiola Barrientos   {K:8073} 1/13/2006
Espectacular!!!!
Please tell me how you do this??????????
Wuauuuuuuu

Ann Nida   {K:45230} 1/13/2006
Thank you for dropping by Fabiloa. This photo is mother nature's kitchen. Straight out of the camera. No Photoshop work at all. Not even any cropping. It's just a beautiful scene. Everything in this photo was truly that colour. The lighting wasn't even very good but it still made for a nice shot because of all the vivid colours in the scene. All I did was press the button to capture a lovely scene. I even had the camera on automatic. No fun huh?! Thank you for your kind words.

Cheers - Ann :)

Mary Brown   {K:67818} 1/22/2006
This is very lovely with the beautiful reflectiosn. The line of green trees makes such a great division.
Mary

Winston Hawke   {K:912} 2/5/2006
Ann, this photo is stunning. The balance between reflecting water and mountain scape is lovely, the colours are gorgeous. So fortunute to find such still water flanked by such incredible geography. The only thing I would like to see is the exposure down a notch, though perhaps a levels adjustment in PS would fix this. The moutain face flares out a little too much in my humble opinion. Not sure if you are facing east or west in this shot, but if you get a chance, try getting back there on either dawn or dusk with the first or last vestiges of sunlight catching the mountain face - I would love to see the colours of the rocks brought out by the warmth of twilight.

Beautiful capture.

Cheers, Winston.
