  Q. nikon D70 VS canon 300D

Asked by Aron -    (K=18) on 12/8/2003
got any idea which one better ???
any suggestion ??

 Anthony Gargani   (K=4527) - Comment Date 12/8/2003
The Canon in your hand is worth two Nikons on the drawing board...

Nikon released a 3D composit 'sketch' of a camera it says it will be making 'soon'. In Nikonese that could mean years.

Sarcasm aside, there is honestly no possible why to answer that reliably without using a whole lot of supposition...

It SHOULD be better simply because it will be almost a year newer than the Canon 300D. It should be better because Nikon is in the position of tailoring the D70 to meet the 300D's weak points head on and beat them. It should be cheaper or at least the same price because technology is getting cheaper all the time. Remember though, that Nikon purchases it's sensors from Sony while Canon produces their own.

WILL IT BE BETTER? No one will know until it is released and tested.

SHOULD YOU WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT? Do you have Nikon lenses and gear? If so, I would wait for it. If you already have an investment in Canon lenses and gear, then I suggest you stick with Canon.

The 300D is notoriously flaky. Cheap plastic construction makes for a camera that's not durable or rugged (pretty much like the regular camera on which it was based).
The D70 is based on the F75 which is far more solid.

On that basis alone I'd say it will be a superior design.
The electronics of the F75 also offer more than those in the 300D (metering, AF, etc.). Even though Nikon hasn't announced the feature set of the D70 if those too are taken from the F75 you should get more camera for your money in that area as well.
Rumour has it the sensor will be that of the D100 like the 300D uses the sensor of the 10D. As such the cameras should be on par in that respect.

The D70 should be formally introduced early next year at the big camerashow in February 2004. At that time we should all learn what the secrecy is all about.

Optics are good from both brands, with each having some lenses that are better than the equivalent of the competitor (but for the typical customer of these low-end bodies those differences are not an issue as they apply to lenses those people will never own and are too small for them to notice anyway).

ahhhh....Joroen we meet again! :)

A couple of questions for Joroen:

What do you base your "notoriously flaky" comment on?

Do you own a 300D?

Have you personally held the 300D in your hands?

Have you compared the 300D body directly to the film Rebel body?

Here's my story (and yes I'm sticking to it...):

First off, I have no 'brand loyalty' here...

I have owned the 300D since September 16, 2003 and shot just over 3,900 frames with it. I have had ZERO problems with it. None. It has not acted FLAKY at all...ever. If I do my part it does it's part. There are thousands of satisfied 300D users out there already. In this day and age of weak QC you will hear of problems with any product produced however.

I have compared the 300D body directly (side by side) to the film Rebels. The two bodies are light years apart. No comparison in fit, finish, weight, etc. The 300D is a solid much heavier camera than the film Rebel. It is actually closer to the EOS film cameras as far as build quality than the Rebel film cameras. I have read of several 300D users dropping their 300D's on pavement with absolutely NO ill affects to the camera body or its operation. Polycarbonate is not 'cheap' per se and actually offers some advantage of shock absorbtion over metal bodied cameras. And there is a metal frame under that plastic. Remember this is an entry level digital SLR. If you are looking for Pro level ruggedness buy a DH1 or 1DS.

The bottom line (for me anyway) is that I was able to purchase a decent featured digital slr with a proven 6mp sensor and proven image quality for less than $900.00 with a very usable lens (I paid $880.00 before tax).

I think it will be great to see Nikon provide a similar camera in the near future. Everyone wins in my opinion.

Nikon is now producing it's own senors.

 Shawn Kellogg   (K=454) - Comment Date 12/9/2003
The Rebel is here, the Nikon is not! End of story! This question is better suited for P.M.A. 2003. But look out for what Canon has in mind:>

 JoAnn Hankins   (K=4) - Comment Date 12/10/2003
Anthony,
In the ads it appears that lenses used on the "regular" Rebel will fit the 300D. Is this so? If true, that would be a big selling point for me.

 Chris Lauritzen   (K=14949) - Comment Date 12/10/2003
One thing will always be true; Nikon and Canon will leapfrog each other. This week Canon is the best, next week Nikon will be and it will change again the following week. The ones to watch are the outsiders like Olympus and Sigma. Honestly right now I think Sigma has the best sensor idea but the company that makes it does not have the proper funds to develop it like it should be. Olympus is also going to be a runner in this game; they have a good product just need to tweak it a bit...

 Anthony Gargani   (K=4527) - Comment Date 12/10/2003
Joann, yes the 300D-Digital Rebel's lens mount and AF system are compatible with the complete Canon EF line of lenses. I have not come across anyone having any problems with these lenses on a 300D, even the older EF mount lenses seem to work fine.

There are some issues using older Sigma EF mount lenses, but it only seems to affect 'some' lenses and not all. Sigma will re-chip the older lenses for free I believe to make them compatible.

 Bjorn Beheydt   (K=12096) - Comment Date 12/12/2003
All Canon EF lenses fit the EOS 300D, yet the 300D's EF-S lens currently only fits the EOS 300D, since it is designed especially for Canon's digital SLR's (starting with the EOS 300D).

It's probably best to use the camera that best fits your budget and the type of photography you're doing. Comparing digital cameras right now is going to drive people up the wall. In the end, it's the photo that matters........right?

 Sergio Leal   (K=1468) - Comment Date 11/4/2004
"This $999 Nikon D70 is the best digital camera under $4,000. It is superior to every other digital camera I've used under $4,000, and it even has some better features and cleaner images than some fringe $5,000 professional DSLRs I've tried. Sure, the Canon 1D-Mk II has some advantages, but it's $4,500, has slower flash sync, weighs a ton and has more primitive battery system. Honestly I still prefer the D70 for its better size, weight and faster flash sync. Everyone's needs vary, and for me I prefer the D70 to everything else digital, including the bigger and slower syncing $4,500 D2X and $1,500 Canon 20D. The D70 has many image quality and ease-of-use improvements over the professional $4,000 D1H I used to lug around, not just in resolution, but also in highlight performance and much better color". - Ken Rockwell.

Not really on topic, but did you already consider the minolta dynax 7D?
