Since you're in Long Beach, get on PCH and head south. You'll find all kinds of interesting sites as you pass thru the little beach communities. Or go north on PCH, make a day trip out of it. Santa Monica mountains are gorgeous. Lots of great spots in and around Malibu. The Getty is another good spot and it's free, except for the $5 to park. There's plenty in Long Beach as well: the harbor, shipyards, etc. Head east into the mountains. Lots of snow right now. Go to Bishop. Go to Mono Lake.

Lots of spots to be found. Don't focus on one particular thing. Just get out and look for something that catches your eye, photograph it, remember the spot, learn from it then go back and take a better photo next time. Lighting changes dramatically as the seasons change.

Have fun.

One of my favorite locations is Joshua Tree National Park. The San Jacinto and San Bernadino Mountains also offer a lot of photo opportunities.

There is always Venice Beach, a mile of the bizzare and untamed. If you prefer things that don't move there is the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Down Town LA. The harbor area must have some striking industrial type shots. Good hunting.

B - you have to be kidding me man :) dude you live in one of the finest fotography locations in the world. I see Joshua was already mentioned. Go another hour or so down the road and hit Death Valley. Doesn't get any more unique. Or just hit the coast as one other poster mentioned. Santa Barbara area is amazing as well as Paso Robles! man have fun wish I was so close

Be careful if you try to photograph at the LB harbor or the San Pedro port. A friend of mine tried that and got a visit a few days later from those great fellas from Homeland (in)Security.

Besides that, all the above mentioned places are awesome. Take a long slow trip up 395 through the owens valley. There is enough inspiration out there to keep Ilford in business for a long time to come.
