Hi Ellen, no worries about finding a suitable photo subject the whole country is FULL of them. The best places to ski/snowboard are definately in the south island, around Queenstown and Wanaka. I think Wanaka is the best because it's not so touristy. From the skifield in Wanaka you can look at some of the best scenery you'll find anywhere - The Matukituki Valley for example. Mt Aspiring.
